error reading partition: possibly not an iPod

the title is an approximation of the errors I've been getting for the past two days. I have a first generation iPod nano. I plugged it into a windows pc and reformatted the discs to FAT32 - I did this outside of iTunes because this computer did not have iTunes installed.

I'm trying to install this through ubuntu 10.04.

This error pops up after I choose the "complete install" option. It also happens with the bootloader option.

You probably messed up the partitions when you formatted.  If so you'll need to fix them.  The easiest way is to restore your Ipod with iTunes.  Failing that, see this (more involved) process:
