Ipod Nano 5th Generation 16GB
« on: January 06, 2011, 03:34:45 PM »
Hello everyone,

I started a topic because i got a Ipod nano 5G 16GB (not to be confused with Ipod 5G video) and so I dont know if this is player is supported. I only see the Ipod nano 4G is supported, and since these 2 are almost the same i tried to use the 4G version but it doesnt work. (what an surprise :P )

Rockbox wont find the player when I try to install it automatically, when I selected the player it will install Rockbox but it wont install the Rockbox bootloader . And when I do it manually, Ipodpatcher wont reconize it aswell.  :-[

Now if rockbox isnt stable or cannot be applied to this Ipod i will try another way to put 6GB of FLAC files on my Ipod.  :P

Also, mabye its me but I dont see the Ipod classic (160GB) on it aswell, is this one also supported?
If someone can help me on this i would much appriciate it.

Neither the 4th nor 5th generation nanos are supported. The only nanos supported are the 1st and 2nd generation models.

The iPod Classic port is too early to be of any use for users. It's very slow and has a lot of issues to be sorted out first. It's therefore an "Unusable" port right now and is best left to developers.

Thank you for the quick reply. Is there any change that the 4th / 5th generation and the Classic will ever be supported in the future?

6 months? Why should we wait that long? I have been looking everywhere for the past 2 months to change the theme for my iPod Nano 5g. iPodWizard website stopped working so I no longer can get themes from there after I found out how to do it. >:(

Well...are *you* going to do the work required?

Or are you simply going to continue to expect other people should have done things for you because you want it to be done, without first thinking of the monumental effort that goes into finding an exploit for these devices, let alone getting code to run, and even more so a fully functional third party OS like Rockbox?

The developers here work on what they want to work on, because they are interested in it personally, and on an entirely volunteer basis.

Each port also needs to be written essentially from scratch, while it it sometimes common that two devices will share some of the same hardware as devices with existing ports, there is always a lot of new (and undocumented) hardware to be tediously reverse engineered and understood, which takes a lot of time and effort, and more importantly a person or preferable several very dedicated persons, to do so.

You're welcome to check out the NewPort page in the wiki to see what goes into it exactly, and you're especially welcome to start contributing to the project.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but your post sounds as though you expect it to be done, without first thinking of the work that goes into it behind the scenes.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

The website you are referring to does themes by making changes to Apple's firmware. Rockbox is an entire replacement firmware with every single feature implemented separately using none of Apple's code. Rockbox is not a way to change the theme on your player, it is a replacement operating system for your player which happens to have a themeable user interface.

We do not support, and have no interest in, modifying Apple's firmware.
