You really don't need to tell us that, TheSeven is an active Rockbox developer as well ;)

EDIT: As a note, I'm not sure if you're implying (as I first thought) that the two are completely separate entities, or not.
While the two projects are quite different, the two communities are quite tightly gelled together.

@[St.] I was just answering cubic's question. I should have quoted him.

I wasn't implying that the 2 communities are separate but I didn't state the opposite either so you might have understood that.

Is there a way to install the firmware from Linux? I have a disused Classic lying around that I could do some testing on. But I don't have a Windows box.

First of all, many thanks to developers for their good work on this hardware.  :)
I installed it on my iPod Classic 1st gen 80 GB and I am using it every day to listen to my music collection. Should you need feedback on how it works, I'm here.
Sometimes it starts looping (TA-TA-TA-TA...) during songplaying, but it's possible to restart the OS, so it's not a big problem. And I'm really happy that now it can play open audio formats without having to convert them before!
I keep on updating Rockbox by the svn link once a week, in order to see if new features come.
Are there any news about video playback plugin developing?
???

Recent SVN activity has gotten the 160GB models (the "thick" design) to work now. Rockbox now has a CE-ATA driver for the thick 160GB iPod Classics.

Update to current a current SVN version, video playback was added quite recently.

I made the update, still I can't see, browsing in the file menu, all the .avi files I put on it. And I'm not able to find the right plugin for playback.
Could you please tell me:
1. the video plugin name;
2. have I to convert video files into something else in order to playback them on the ipod?

I thank you in advance for your help.
[UPDATE] Sorry, I just tried using an .mpg file and it works. So, I will always need a previous conversion from .avi to .mpg in order to play video files. I am going to convert some other right now, in order to watch them and to verify how this new feature works on classic. Further updates here?

Hello guys.
Thank you everyone who made Rockbox possible. Great work.

I have a question: am I able to install Rockbox on my 160 Gb fat Classic using this http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/IPod_Classic_iLoader_Installation instruction?

It is said:

What does that mean? What should I do?

I’m not very dumb, but since I haven’t followed Rockbox development I find everything kinda confusing…
And that “highly experimental” things are scaring me, but I do want to try Rockbox!

I don't have one, but by my reading it should work.

I have a 160GB 6G (thick) Classic.  Are updates on the status pages up-to-date?

How is the scroll wheel sensitivity?  Apple took some heat because most (if not all) skins couldn't be used effectively because the silicone was just too thick -- no matter how thin they tried to make it.

Is battery run time comparable to the OF?

Is the USB transfer speed comparable to the 5.5G ?

Bass, Treble, EQ OK?

Is video playback fps (MPEG2, I assume) more than the iPod 5.5G video?

Currently, what is thought to be the most annoying issue?  General stability or a particular function to be implemented?

Battery life is quite poor, lots of things don't work right.  Search around, theres plenty of info.

Hello people.

I'm looking into Rockbox for the first time, so don't hit me please. :)

I have an iPod 6G 160GB 2007 Edition, not the 2009 one. Am I understand this thread correctly that there is no Rockbox or other OS for this specific iPod version available? I like the handling, video playback, battery life, capacity, and also size of the iPod. Basically those are the important things I want to see in my favorite media player:
- Video support (as long as there's an open source converter, i don't care what format)
- nice handling (I know, vague... but I think most are good)
- battery life of at least 30 hours for music, 3 of video or so
- capacity of at least (!) 30GB
- size not (much) bigger as iPod 6G 160GB 2007 Edition (sorry, no size specifications found...  :-\ )

However, I am desperately missing features like:
- bookmarks for videos, playlists, songs, etc...
- a "add to playlist after current song" feature
- a "add to end of playlist" feature
- in general more in-place iPod features like deleting playlists, songs, etc. I don't always want to connect my to PC in order to do these things...  :-\

So, currently I am experiencing some pixel errors. So I thought of buying the next iPod 6G, which is also not yet supported by Rockbox, correct? And it's old already, so there might be a new generation soon.
I know this is no board for hardware recommendations, but I would love a new player to have Rockbox support to try it for the first time. So, maybe somebody can give me an advice what to do...?
Or are my specifications so specific that only an iPod is currently somehow fulfilling the above?

Really a big thanks for reading through this. :)
Bye
