Just Saying That "Rockboxing" is 100% Legal.
« on: January 03, 2011, 04:10:32 AM »
Hi guys.

I was reading the FAQ and it said the devs of this project BELIEVE they are in the green side.

Well I would like say they are indeed in the green side doing nothing illegal, as Jailbreaking an iTouch is officially legal in the US. Pretty sure that act includes Rockboxing.

Just saying so the FAQ may get updated and more people do this, because this kind of stuff is really fun!

I think you're being far too general here, to be honest.

While you're correct in that Rockbox believes that they are doing nothing wrong, several manufacturers in fact do feel that flashing/installing/whatever a custom operating system in whole or in part, or editing of the original operating system in whole or in part is in fact quite wrong and explicitly forbidden in the warranty.

And, while this is not "illegal", some device manufacturers would probably rather it didn't happen, and have been known to reject warranty claims on devices with user modified firmware.

You are also talking about a device that Rockbox doesn't support, in just one country in the world too...so the conversations about legality are really quite speculative.

I did not know that it was in doubt.

Heaven forbid I do what I want with an object I purchased. :)

Rockbox servers etc. are in Sweden, developers are all over the world.

Anyway, this was already perfectly legal in most countries, it seems the US is sort of catching up.  However, we are not lawyers and in many/most/all countries none of this has been tested, so we aren't in a position to give legal advice.

[St.] is also quite right in what he says about warranties, which are of course different to legality.

*Some* servers are in Sweden. ;)

Mirrors are available globally, and depending on whether or not you count build clients as servers, then they are too!

I moddify several divices with custom software, one of the deivces is the Wii, Nintendo (maker of the wii) has gone out of there tracks to personaly find the poeple resposible for modiffing the system. The people who made the devices may become mad, but I don't belive your breaking any laws, so long as you dont enable piracy or anything, you should be safe (atleast in the US).
