Instead of static usb picture, a bigger charge status indicator
« on: December 20, 2010, 01:43:09 PM »
Instead of static usb picture, a bigger charge status indicator that shows charge progress would be good. Currently bottom-right corner there is a tiny progress indicator which is hard to see.

Plus a big clock like this but more glossy would be better.

Actually would it be possible to have a skinnable "While Charging Screen" (WCS) or would that be overkill?

Probably from this development point every new feature request would be quite challenging.  ;)

If you see the USB icon you're in USB mode, not charging mode. While the player can charge on USB connection it doesn't need to (you can disable charging on USB, at least for various players). And some players can't charge from USB at all (like the H100 series).

Plus, with the default theme the battery icon that also shows if there's charging in progress is in the top left, not the bottom right.

I see USB picture plus tiny charging status on bottom left (different theme) But in the end while charging I want to see big progress indicator like in the picture above.

And how do you want to use the player when it's charging but not connected via USB (i.e. it has a power-only connection)? By watching a big charging icon?

I may be mistaken about the original intent, but my idea was a screen with a clock on it, battery indicator, maybe a calendar if it's not too hard to code.

I'd use it by looking at it to see the time, or to see if the battery was full.

That seems as though it would remove an awful lot of usability...

You'd rather see a big charging image and a clock than actually be able to use your player while it's in a charge only state?

Indeed. Since my question about the use of such an animation obviously wasn't clear enough let me state a useage pattern I do have:

I'm sometimes using the player when the battery becomes low. However, I do want to continue using the player. Therefore I connect the player either to a charger or to a USB port while holding the appropriate button to not make a USB connection. Now the player is charging, but I can still use it. If the player would switch to some "charging only" mode that displays an animation I wouldn't be able to do that. And I really want to keep that functionality.

Maybe I'm inferring too much, but I took the original post as meaning he wanted to see a better screen while connected via USB. Now that I read back, I see that you did specifically ask about it NOT being connected via USB. I think I accidentally ignored the word *not*.

I don't think anybody would seriously suggest removing the WPS (or others) screen from Rockbox during times where it could be displayed. In fact, I once asked if it was possible to continue showing it while connected via USB and was told that it was not feasible.

In lieu of that, I replied to the original post suggesting that, if we can't listen to music and browse menus, perhaps it would be possible to at least see a clock, charge indicator, and some other info, during that specific time where the player is otherwise unusable.

The most suitable solution is put an option. I'm the type of user who use USB connection for charging+transfering only and I would set it to indicator+clock mode.

Configurable charging only/data connection has been discussed a few times, there's even a (probably quite dated) patch in the tracker that does this.

I just don't think that anybody has come up with an implementation that was universally liked and/or suited all targets.

There seems to be some confusion, but I'm pretty sure what is being discussed with the "clock/calendar/whatever" screen is that it would only be present when there is no data connection.

So this doesn't fit your expected use case.

I *think*...I'm confused too now ;)

What would this option do exactly? If you're in a charge-only connection, the player can be used normally, and I don't see any need for an option to change that. If you want to see a clock then, run the clock plugin.

If you're in a USB mass storage connection, nobody is objecting to a themeable screen with various data on it, people are just pointing out that this is nontrivial to do.
