Rockbox on both linux and win?
« on: December 14, 2010, 12:36:46 PM »
I am a competent, but not sophisticated user of computers, just so you know where I am at.

I just got a Sansa Clip+ 2 GB to specifically play with Rockbox.  The desktop computer in the house is a Linux box and my laptop is a windows box(win xp).  Will it make any difference if I install rockbox on the Sansa though one player or the other?  I will mostly be using the laptop to play with the Sansa for adding or deleting music, but I would like to be able to also use the Linux box.

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

You can use Rockbox Utilty to install Rockbox on your player from any of the Big Three OSes (Linux, OS X, Windows). You can also copy music to the Clip+ from any OS.

There's lots of information on the forums and in the manual to help you get around with the Clip+.

No.

I'm using several players, and I'm updating (and have been installing) Rockbox from various machines and operating systems. Except for the system specific differences (like drive letter on Windows, mount path on Linux and OS X etc) it doesn't make a difference. If you're using more advanced features of Rockbox Utility you will find differences though: voicing supports SAPI on Windows but not on OSX where it uses the systems voicing system that's completely different (and since I like the shipped voice of OS X best I use OS X for creating voice files :) ) Those are no functions you can seriously harm your player with though so no need to worry.
