Question about playlists, and the music selection system
« on: December 13, 2010, 04:32:06 AM »
Having recently installed rockbox on my D2, I've gotta say, I like it.  It may not be 100 percent for the d2, but it's pretty good.

That said, I liked the d2's interface much better in some respects that I will go over, but I'm curious, is there some way to make it like that myself that I'm missing out on?

I'll confess I didn't exactly read the manual especially carefully, so perhaps somebody here knows.

Anyway, here's what I miss about the d2's music selection system:
You didn't have to rewrite a playlist every time you selected something from a folder, or an artist/album catagory.

Basically, you could select the "boundary" through the repeat function's options instead of just starting a new playlist each time, making it possible to play only the files in the same folder, all audio files, or simply that one track and to change this on the fly as you like.

While ideally, I'd actually like something even more customizable than that that I could figure out (for example, I'd like to keep audiobooks and similar things out of my music when it's on allshuffle), that would be a good start.

So, to review, I'm curious if it's possible yet, to select a track from an artist/album database subfolder or the actual directories in my music collection and still keep the current playlist, so long as that playlist contains the track I have selected.

Basically, I'm tired of having to search through my entire library of tracks in order to locate a specific track and play it while still having my entire music library on my playlist.  The fact that the playlist actually shuffles with this only compounds the navigation problems, to the point that I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here, some option or context menu command.

Ah crap, didn't notice that the databases had their own forum section.  I'm sure this will be moved soon enough looking at all the other moved topics, but my bad.

Also, having skimmed my post again, it seems I've given some slightly extraneous information, so I'll post a little tldr here to make sure my meaning is clear:

I want to be able to select my music from artist and album folders from the file browser, both of the directory variety and the database generated variety, which keep up with the now playing list.

When I select music from these folders, I'd prefer it not create a whole new playlist of only the files in that folder when the song I select is already in the playlist I'm using.  When I'm trying to play my entire library, and then get an idea for what I'd like to play (perhaps a song by the same artist, in the same album. etc etc...), I'd like to be able to select it from the file browser without compromising my entire playlist.  Right now, it's either or.  I have the choice of taking my playlist off shuffle and scrolling through my whole library of tracks, or the more annoying choice of doing this through the "all tracks" option in the file browser, rewriting my playlist with the exact same playlist, haha.

Anyone know a way to accomplish one, or both of these criteria?  I got the file browser to update locations with the current track playing the other day, but now it's not doing that... not sure what I did, but I know at least 1 is possible.  Anyone know if the second is possible, and how both are?

Thanks.

Look through the Manual for mentions of Playlists and Insert.

Okay, will do... though I'm getting the feeling that this was skimmed, but it wouldn't make sense for features like this to not be implemented anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was there.

Okay, I checked it out.

Seems that the queue feature is more up my alley in this respect, since it, while it creates a redundant copy, it doesn't create a permanent one like it would with the insert feature.

Anyway, yeah, that works just fine for now, and in conjuction with making a root playlist it seems to do the trick, since you select it from the file directory and as a result the directory hotkey warps to the folder your mp3 is located in automatically when the song changes.  Pretty much the same thing, albeit with a little more effort.  Thanks for the tip.
