Rockbox works on G6??
popper:
Told a friend of mine of Rockbox, and she said she has an older iPod. I looked it over and told her it's a G6 and will not work. She said it was not, and I said that I'd just install it and see what happens. After all, I figured that if it does not work, I'll just uninstall it.
Installed it. Do not recall if I set installation on automatic or specified G5, but it did install. Worked. A week later it froze once. I could not soft boot it. To unfreeze it, I plugged it straight into my PC and then it reset and worked fine. It still works fine, and after about three weeks (or that's what she said, granted she knows little about Rockbox, but she claims to listen to music / podcasts on it).
This unit is brown, and IS a G6. Am pretty certain it is a 80 GB and installed the Rockbox version 3.7.1. Looks like this (I did not upload this pic, just found it):

Wonder if others have attempted to install Rockbox on the G6 and if so what happened (I live in Tokyo, and this unit was bought locally --- perhaps units here are not encrypted ??).
Absolutely confused here ...

soap:
You are mistaken. I'm unable to say where, but the narrative as written is impossible.
Even if Tokyo 6th generation iPods did not encrypt their firmware, Rockbox code could not and would not work on the hardware. There is no ifs, ands, ors, or buts on this point.
I wonder if the misguided attempts to "just install it and see what happens" we see here stem from the long reign of Microsoft Windows on commodity PC hardware? Do people start to believe that the difference between a 5th generation iPod and a 6th generation iPod are as insignificant as the difference between a Windows 95 box with a Matrox VGA card and a new Windows 7 box with the latest GeForce?
popper:
OK. Accept what you say. I will see the gal next week and tell her to bring her iPod. Will take a picture of it and will post.
If I am incorrect, which is possible, I will state it as so.

saratoga:
If rockbox installs its not a 6G. Go check the Apple website, they have a guide that helps you figure out which ipod is which.
BigPapi:
It must be a 5.5G if it is 80GB, and RB runs on it, from what I understand.
