Would a RAM problem cause this error?

How big is the patchset (all of the patch files together, after unzipping)?

Th epatchset encompasses 28.4 MB in total as indicated by properties.
Llorean:
That's far larger than the "5 or 6MB" saratoga said is available, and larger as well than the total 8mb the player has. You won't be able to play midis without a much smaller patchset.

Assuming the midi_debug function works, the plugin should print MALLOC BARF over and over again if it runs out of memory, so this is probably some other problem (missing or corrupt file most likely).

I think thats just the size of the zip file you downloaded. How many are you actually using in your file?
