Ipod 4G (greyscale) data aborts after database initialize

Hey Guys,
First post here, let me start off by saying you are doing a great job. Fascinating project. Heard about it on floss weekly pod-cast.
So far I have successfully rockboxed a Sansa e200 V1 and a a friends FuzeV1.
Been pulling my hair out lately with My IPOD. I got a (new? off ebay) 40GB HD to breath life back into my ipod Classic 4g greyscale.
Everything seemed to go great, restored via itunes, did a complete RB 3.71 install. Loaded some music (mp3's) and it seemed to work great, database and all. Problem came when i filled it to the rafters (37 or so GB) of music and did a database initialize. On reboot (about halfway through database refresh, it conks out with a data abort error at 0004cc68 (0).
I did some reading, and found that some people had trouble with faulty tags causing similar problems. So I tried to identify the offending album. But I am pretty sure it's not a problem of bad tags. As I will load up a folder called Music with about 6.7 gigs of music, initialize and reboot. Goes great database works a treat. Then I will add another folder Music2 fill it with 10 gigs of different mp3. Init DB reboot , and bang Data abort. So just to prove to myself that it's not a problem with a tag in Music2 folder, I drop a database.ignore file into the Music (first folder), Init, reboot and it works great! So it does not seem to be a problem with the tags?
HDD seems to run a little hot, not too sure it was really brand new as claimed. But ran spin-rite on it and it seems good, aside from the heat.
Any Ideas?
Thanks In advance.

Here is a build with FS#11776 added. If you go to the debug menu, you should be able to enable an option to log the database build. Then when the device crashes, you should get a metadata.log file on your disk (although depending how the crash happens you may need to check the file system for errors to recovery the file if it dies while writing).
http://duke.edu/~mgg6/rockbox/rockbox4g-logging.7z
I would be very interested in seeing this file that causes the data abort if you can find it.

Thanks for the reply Saratoga,
Not sure I did this right, but here goes.
I renamed my .rockbox folder and dropped in the one you pointed me to.
I then enabled the metatag logging
I then initialized the DB, it crashed during that initialization (usually it only happens on reboot)
then I did a hard reset, and it also data aborted on the reboot.
It left me a log file.
It seems that it did complete the entire scan, right down to the last song of the last album.
Booted into OF and put my Original .Rockbox folder back in place, but on the subsequent reboot i got a Panic message, not sure what happened there?

Can you post the message when it crashes with my build?

do you mean the Data Abort when I initialize the database? (i know i said crash, perhaps i mispoke)
Post Merge: December 07, 2010, 12:41:37 AM
Just ran another initialize, gave me a Data abort at 0004c740 (0)
Post Merge: December 07, 2010, 03:32:08 PM
Just loaded up a bunch of newly minted oggs from well tagged flacs, about 16GB worth of ogg files. It gave me the same Data Abort code 0004c740 (0) after initializing the database.
Starting to wonder if its a memory or other hardware problem I am having

Hello there.
Got "data abort error at 0004cc68" as well on my Ipod 4G greyscale after database initialisation.
Same symptoms, only difference is my hard drive has been updated from the initial 40G to a 60GB one.
I used to be able to use the database, I was planning to downgrade to see if it changes anything...
I'll give you the logs with your build asap, I'm working ATM.

tekrotzen,
I have the same problem with my 60GB iPod Colours...I'm trying to get to the bottom of it and find the commit that broke it, but I have not had much time to do so lately.
For now, the way I found to get around it is to install the 3.7/.1 release build and initialise/update the database then install a current build once the database has been initialised already.
Updating will also cause a data abort (or it does on my iPod Colours at least) so you'll need to turn off automatic updates to the database, and you'll have to roll back to the release build if you want to change out tracks and/or update the database.
I'm sorry, I know this is a workaround and not a fix...but at the moment it is the best I can offer.
Hopefully I get a bit more time in the near future to sit down and do a binary search to find the commit that broke the database.

Hmm.
Ok, well...
Reformated my ipod, installed the mentioned build, transfered a few flac files onto the drive, and... "Unfortunately", no problems so far.
I'll update if I run into the same issue after I finish transfering my music!
Until then... Thanks a lot to everyone!

I have not been able to use the database function on my ipod mini 2g for some time. I didn't have time to deal with it for the last couple months. Today I just formatted and installed the newest version , reloaded all files and got the same thing - Data abort at 00043DC0
edit to add:
is there a way to generate the database on the computer while it is plugged in? Seems like it would be a good workaround for future problems
for now, does anyone know what version I can revert to on mini 2g in order to build the database?

I have the same problem (data abort after database update or database initialization and reboot) with my iPod 4G (greyscale, 20gb changed to 16gb compact flash). This occured with the latest stable version included in the Rockbox-Utiliy 1.2.8..
I tried the archived version that was suggested in the installer, r29143. Now I can update or initialize the database with no reboot and it seems to work.
[edit]
I just noticed that with r29143 my 4G now sounds a little bit muffled, and with the same equalizer settings the same songs get distorted way faster than with my Nano 2G (with Rockbox 3.7.1 through the current installer 1.2.8 ).
I did not notice such a big difference with the previous versions and I am beginning to suspect there was no such big difference because I crank up the volume sooo much higher with clear sound now...
Why do I have always problems with my 4G, but none with my Nano 2G (even when it wasn't supported)?

I rolled back to 3.7.1 stable and it still throws an error when committing the database. I'm not sure how to turn on logging to see if there is a specific file causing problems.... I want my auto-change-directory:random back!

larry_llama, "Auto-Change Directory" has to do with playback from the file browser, not the database.

Yes but auto change "random" requires database initialization... I think

No. It relies on a list generated by the plugin random_folder_advance_config.
(I use this playback option without building the database on my F40)

You are right... The last time I did that it was so long ago that I've since confused the process with the database building.
Awesome, thanks!
