Iriver h10 20gb and h320

(1/1)

SheepCake:
I just was wondering if either of these units is better then the other sound quality, batt life or in any other meaningfull way.

I mean I dont care if the controls are a little weird, i have used samsung touch control players so i can live with less then optimal controls, i mean sound quality and componants used and batt life ( under vorbis and mpc mostly )

I got an h10 20gb at goodwill a couple days ago for 25bucks ( in great condition )

A buddy of mine may trade me his h320 for one of my fuzes because he kind of wants a smaller player that he can carry in his pocket when taking his daily walk rather then the brick he got back when they where still over 200bucks on clearance.

I have been looking and it appears i can toss an 80gb zif drive into the h10 for 50-65bucks, I have seen a few reports of people getting the same drive into the h320 using very small zif to pata adapters(or flexy ones) and would also like to know how hard that would be.

Im no noob at taking this kind of thing apart and fixing/repairing it, Infact for a couple years thats what I did for a living, replacing the hdd and batt in either of these units looks like childs play compared to some of the stuff i have had to repair over the years :)

and yes, I like clunky old bricks, and have always wanted one of the iriver bricks(now it looks like i may endup with 2 of them!!!)  I like my fuze but, well ever since I saw the h320 back when it was pretty new and my buddy won one, I have wanted one....i know im crazy :)

thanks for any info you can give me the drive im talking about is the
SAMSUNG HS081HA
I know, its a SLOW 3600rpm 2mb cache drive, but its in my price range, and would let me more easily grab

Oh I also have a buddy whos going to ship me the zune i sold him(he broke the screen) so i can yank the hdd out, so i would also have a 30gb hdd I could use in whatever player didnt get the 80 :)

again thanks for any info/help you can give me, im still waiting for acct activation on misticriver....(3 days now.....)

EDIT: should have said, "what player is more well suited to rockbox the h10 or h300" since thats what i really meant when i posted.

again thanks :-)

I have lots of personal experience with the iriver H320 and H340, but none with the h 10.  Hence I can't compare the H300 series with the H 10.

That said, I have found the H300 machines very easy to upgrade with the Toshiba 1.8" PATA and ZIF drives, with some caveats.  The PATA drives are a simple swap, but the 5 mm thickness limit for the H320 doesn't give you many options - the biggest you can get is only 40 GB.  That pushes you to consider ZIF alternatives.  The best ZIF adaptor in my opinion is the one offered by koala007 - see http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=21676.30.  It is small enough to fit the tight tolerances inside the iriver box.

Regarding ZIF hard drives, there is some discussion of potential Toshiba models at http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/HardDriveReplacement.   I have had great success putting in Toshiba's PATA MK8007GAH (80GB) and their ZIF MK1214GAH (120GB) into my two H340s.  I have preferred to upgrade my H320s with compact flash memory cards.  See http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CFModGuide.  You can get 64GB for about $160 US from Newegg and probably others.  I only went as far as 32GB for cost reasons.

I am unfamilliar with the 80GB Samsung drive you've identified.  Reading the comments in the forums over the last few years, I've seen that some people have had difficulties taking drives manufactured for Apple players and putting them in other players.  The may fit physically, but some have format incompatibilities.  I wish you luck!  It would be great if you have found a good new option for upgrading the capacity of the H320 or H 10.  Let us know how it goes!
