Sansa e280 - partial usb connection, and freeze problems
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:10:54 AM »
Hi. I have a 8GB Sansa e280 (V1) with a 16GB card. Have run Rockbox on it for a couple of years with no problems at all. Quite recently I upgraded from 3.3 (I think) to 3.6. Initially it was fine - connected and played as usual - but a few days ago when I tried to connect to two different PCs (one XP and one Vista), I had major problems which have continued. These are:

- the device was either not picked up at all, or
- device was found, and drive letters assigned, but without any capacity and with 'unknown' file systems
- Rockbox plays ok, but freezes when I try to access any applications (I was trying to run the desktidy function when I discovered this, but it's freezing on all apps). (NB: This happened after the USB problems surfaced, so perhaps my repeated attempts to get it recognised by a PC has led to some kind of disc curruption?)
- similarly, it froze when I tried to access the build version (RB info > version) - hangup message was 'scanning disk'

The usb problem happens with both RB and the original firmware, and whether I select MSC, MTP and whether the HID is selected either 'yes' or 'no'.

I'm pretty gutted as, although it plays fine, obviously I can't use it fully nor load any different music to it. And as it was working perfectly well until a few days ago, I'm surprised that it seems to have had such a major breakdown! (Could it even be a simple cable fault?)

Any suggestions or advice will be very welcome.

Yes, filesystem corruption could easily cause this, and might well be caused by unstable connections

This also points to filesystem corruption

A faulty cable is a possible (and likely) reason, yes.

OK, thanks - I'll get a new one and try it again. Presumably I'll most likely need to format it once the connection is good?
