Chronon: I was talking about "Browse to base music directory using the file browser" which makes sense if you know what you're ttalking about but I could easily see that being misunderstood...

What phrase would you suggest instead?

"from the main menu, choose "files" then highlight the directory with all your music" etc... no chance for that to be misunderstood

Sure.  I can aim for a procedural description whenever possible.

thanks chronon and JDgordon, and its ok JD, I understood what he meant, I just was not familiar with rock box yet as its my first exposure to the program, and did not realize  till after exhausting every suggestion people could give me, that maybe I should try to re-install since I seemed to have a problem nobody else ive been able to find had encountered yet, I only asked about the root, because I thought, since there was nothing in the root of my player, or the folder labeled root, that maybe he meant something else...

The solution probably would have been found sooner, had I had more time to describe in detail what I had already tried previous to my first post, Chronon was as helpful as he could possibly be in the situation with the information he had I believe, thankyou for your help chronon.

Did you ever try resetting your settings? Reinstalling can't have fixed it unless the simple fact that it reset your settings is what resolved it (which leans things heavily toward you having just accidentally changed your file view).

The only way reinstalling would've dramatically changed anything is if you installed a different build version when you reinstalled, and had been exceedingly unfortunate enough to have a lone problematical build.

I had never messed with the settings to begin with, only one I changed was the recursively insert one to "on" as I had read on another site that I needed to do that to make it work... no other settings had even been touched...

Each time I installed, I installed version 3.7, so no...same build each time.  from what ive read online, many people have problems with rock box not working properly, still better than the sansa firmware,  rock box is awesome, but its not perfect, problems have and will continue to pop up... kind of a given.

The file view setting is easy to accidentally change via the quick screen.

If you did install 3.7 each time, then there's absolutely no reason why reinstalling fixed it unless it was due to resetting the settings unless the file on your player was corrupt in exactly the right way (which would be a copy problem or a disk problem, and not a Rockbox problem).

Just as a side note, Rockbox is a single word, not two.
