Playlist for playing all not working...
« on: November 17, 2010, 05:37:26 AM »
Ive read the manual, read and tried the directions of many people, and no matter what I do, the create playlist function for making a playlist of all of the songs wont work, playlist isn't created, cant be found anywhere:/ oh,I have a sansa fuze V1... im surprised there isn't an easy play all option to begin with though... Other than this one issue, and the fact it seems to be draining my battery much faster than normal, I love rock box...

What is your "view files" setting?
How are you trying to create the playlist?
Where are you looking for the playlist?

My method:
Browse to base music directory using the file browser > Bring up the Context Menu and choose "Add to new playlist" > Use virtual keyboard to enter a name and accept it

This playlist will be located in /Playlists/.

That method works for creating a playlist 1 at a time, I have been trying to use the create playlist function which both the manual, and everyone else online says will automatically create a playlist of every song on the mp3 player, it would take forever to make a playlist of every song one at a time...

Have you tried following the instructions that Chronon gave?

You need to be outside the folder with your music in, then with that folder highlighted, bring up the context menu and choose Add to new playlist.

i.e. Suppose your music folder on your fuze is called "music", you'd need to be on the root of your player, then highlight "music" then bring up the context menu and Add to new playlist.

With Chronon's suggestion you may also pay attention to the "Recursively insert directories" setting (in the Playlist submenu).

About the original question: can you describe in more detail where you search for the playlist? It's not clear to me what happens exactly (I'm reading that you used the "Create Playlist" function but then it gets a bit imprecise).

Edit: wording

Sorry, im new to this, and dont have more than a few minutes at any given time to be on the internet usually, as im the only caregiver of a stage 4 cancer patient, so it keeps me very very busy.
Anyway I followed instructions online to turn Recursively insert directories to "on" already, then restart, go to create playlist, when searching for playlists I check in the catalog, nothing there.

Also, to the other comments, yes, I know how to add single files, and a folder even to A new playlist, but the manual and online instructions from other people both state that clicking create playlist with recursively insert directories turned on, should automatically create a playlist with everything on it, That doesn't work, and with so much music, even adding by folder would take me hours.  (about 8 GB of music roughly)

Chronon's directions don't work either, however I have figured an end run around it, I put all of my music into a single folder labeled "Play all" put it on my player, set it to shuffle and start playing!

So, problem sort of solved, but id still like to learn a way to do it automatically so I dont have to have two copies of each song on my player... (I kept the other copy so I can make smaller playlists with just the folders)

Curator:  I actually performed all of the steps I described this morning and have verified that it contains all of the tracks on my player (thanks to pixelma for remembering the "recursively insert" option that I forgot to mention).

"Create playlist" does not store the resulting playlist in the playlist catalog, it stores it in the root of your player as "root.m3u8".

The fact that you're entering a folder named root suggests you didn't read the link, nor understand what he's saying. Especially since the first suggestion was to enter the "base music folder" which is not necessarily your root folder. Just whatever folder all your music files and / or other music folders are in (it may be the root of your filesystem or it may not).

Why don't you tell us step by step what you're trying (probably after rereading the section of the manual on the context menu, and specifically the option in it to create a playlist based on the folder you're in) so someone can tell you which steps aren't the ones he told you to do.

I followed his original directions step by step, the context menu wouldn't come up when highlighting the "music" folder and holding down the select button. Ive also followed tons of other suggestions step by step, as I have already stated, I have followed the steps in the manual STEP BY STEP,  I TRIED EVERY WAY Ive seen people suggest on the internet to do it , then entered the root folder to see if it was there since there was nothing about the playlist in the root directory , I am not an idiot, I KNOW what a root directory is, AS I stated already, I checked the root directory, wasn't there, so I checked the root folder too just in case that is what he meant, ALSO not there, then came back here to chrono sending me to a wiki about ROOT DIRECTORIES... I KNOW how to follow simple instructions, no need to be so condescending, it just so turns out, the instructions where not what was needed to fix this situation. (although I thank those who gave them for their effort.)

Now, I have solved the problem, something NOBODY else even suggested, just assuming im to stupid to follow directions, Decided to start from scratch, I removed Rock box from my player entirely, re-installed the original firmware, checked to make sure everything was working, then Manually installed Rock box, and now everything works.

Turns out the problem was with the rock box installer most likely (or maybe some sort of conflict with something on my pc?), cause the manual install is working perfectly, I clicked create playlist, checked the root FOLDER, and bam, right there,in the folder, root.m3u8, and it plays all of my music, And the method chrono originally related to me works now as well.

Arg.... lovely thread.

Curator: I've just tried "menu > playlists > create playlist" and it did indeed work as expected, if you are willing to come back, please try it again, maybe it is a bug that needs fixing.

Chronon: please remember to not make up terminology and that it is better for everyone to assume users know nothing (better too much instruction than misleading or not enough).

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

My apologies, but which terminology are you referring to?  I believe my only oversight was failing to mention "Recursively Insert Directories".  It has certainly not been my intent to mislead or cause frustration here.

If you are talking about my mention of the root of the player, this seems to be a quite common usage based on a quick search of the forums.  I certainly do not wish to cause further confusion, I simply meant that the path of the playlist will be /root.m3u8.

Curator, I am glad that you have discovered the reason that the instructions weren't working for you.  It was becoming apparent to me that the factor was specific to your setup.  It's possible that you just hit a bad build.  Rockbox Utility generally works perfectly for extracting the archive to your player.

One theory mentioned elsewhere was that his file view setting somehow got changed (probably to "music") so that the playlists weren't visible to him (though this wouldn't explain why he was unable to get the context menu to open at all).
