Clip V1: Charging with charger, USB mode confusion in RB

When using the car adapter and car adapter mode in RB, my Clip will sometime go into a state where the USB mode alternates from trying to make a connection to attempting to resume playback.  It also occurs randomly in the middle of playback, sometime recovering and sometimes not. 

The cig lighter > power adpter connection is secure.  Using v3.7 on a Clip V1 and the car adapter is for a Motorola Razor V3 (standard USB 5v out).
