Sansa Fuze, Ergnomy and return to WPS...

Hi,

it's been a long time since I use rockbox on my sansa Fuze (v1) and I always find that there is a problem of ergonomy with the touch assignment.

If you're in the "playlist screen" , you should press "Rewind" to return to the WPS.
If you're in the "quick settings screen", you should press "Enter" to return to the WPS.
If you're elsewhere, you should press "Play/Pause" to return to the WPS.

I never exactly remember immediatly which touch to press depending in which screen I am

Won't it be simpler and more egonomic to have the possibility to press "Home" everywhere to come back to the WPS? The touch "Home" is never used (except when your are in the WPS to show the playlist and it won't be affected).

I really think it will be an improvment!!

What do you think about that?

You can, make a thorough list of what changes you are proposing (e.g. where you want to put the functions that are currently on home etc.), and post it.  Good luck...

I think it will be quite simple to explain (even if I don't know exactly all the options off rockbox).
My idea is to use the Home button everywhere where it is not actually used to return to the wps (if the hotkey function is not activated).
I think, the only place where it is used is in the WPS and it's not incompatible with my suggestion (on the contrary).

When you are in the "settings menus", "playlist screen", "quick settings screen", "context menus",... it make sense and it's more ergonomic to have only ONE key, the HOME button to go back to your main screen, your "home", the While Playing Screen.

To have the same comportment (go back to the WPS) from the music browser screen by default when no hotkey is configured (It's what is actually done when you are in the WPS and that's the default action of the home key is to display playlist). My idea is that the default action when no hotkey is set should be to go back to the WPS.

I think that a new line in the hotkey setting to "go back to the wps" could be part of the solution to complete the default action describe previously.

To summarise again : When you press HOME button you should go back to the WPS except if you are already in it or that you are in place where the hotkey has a meaning AND that it has been activated.

Please verify that it is not actually used anywhere else (even for hotkey etc.), then write out a list like:

WPS:

hotkey (currently on short home) move to short menu
return to menu (currently on short menu) move to short home

or something similar.  It is much much easier to see an overview of what you are moving where like this than in a paragraph of text.  If you want people to agree with you then you need to make it easy for them

Also, you need to check all functions.  For instance home currently deletes the selected bookmark in the recent bookmark lists.  This is probably easier to check in the code (http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi/trunk/apps/keymaps/keymap-fuze.c?view=markup)

Sounds like a great idea to me. I have wondered about this, too, because it really makes no sense to have a bunch of different shortcuts, depending on the situation.

I also think the WPS option in the main menu can/should be removed, because I don't think anyone uses that to return to the WPS, everyone probably uses the shortcuts.

This is based on what exactly?

And are you sure that all targets have the shortcut button?

This just proves that you think wrong . I use that all the time.

Yeah, I was thinking of this again today, and I found that it wouldn't be such a good idea after all, because not all players will have enough buttons to do this, and because if you have a player with a built-in radio (like the Fuze), you wouldn't be able to resume unless you created a new playlist. Nevermind.
