Boot back to apple
« on: November 08, 2010, 09:02:35 PM »
I know that you can dual boot both rockbox and the apple firmware, but I'm having an issue. My nano (2nd gen) doesn't have a hold button anymore, so is there anyway I can switch between the two without it?

You could modify the source a bit and compile yourself a customized bootloader that uses a different button to boot the OF; that's one method.

There's another method as well: if you're talking about just the plastic hold button being broken off and not the switch itself (which is part of the mainboard), you can take something small like a spudger or even a small tweezer and carefully flick the hold switch mechanism to boot into the OF.

And while this may be delving off the topic a wee bit, you can always replace the hold switch, which is part of the entire top bezel of the nano, with this part.

The current Nano2g bootloader code supports pressing and holding the MENU button to power the player on and boot the original firmware, but I don't know if this has been released as a bootloader binary yet.

Nope, it has not.

However:
bootloader-ipodnano2g.ipodx
ipodpatcher.exe

Simply place both files in the same directory, cd to that dir and do:

./ipodpatcher.exe -a bootloader-ipodnano2g.ipodx

With this bootloader you'll be able to boot the Apple FW by simply holding Menu during boot.
Enjoy.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
