Problem with 3.7 connecting as Rockbox media player
« on: November 08, 2010, 03:31:27 PM »
I have almost my whole mp3 collection on my ipod (5g) and not on my computer.
I use to connect the iPod to the computer and play the files from the removable drive.
This has worked just fine so far.
But I updated to the latest rockbox version 3.7 and my Apple iPod has become a Rockbox media player, it has been given a new drive letter in windows and the screen on the iPod when connected to the computer doesn't look the same as on previous (3.6 and past) versions.

The problem is that when I play a file located on my iPod on my computer, it kind of freezes for a second on all tracks. Really annoying.

Problem solved when I connect the iPod booted into Apple OS. So there is definitely no problem with my iPod.

Is this a bug or a setting I need to make (I really tried to look for a setting for this but haven't found any) to make my iPod connect as a iPod (instead of a Rockbox media player) as it has in previous version of rockbox?

You can reboot into the Apple firmware (see manual I forget the exact buttons on your player).  But its odd that it makes a difference.

We probably have a different spin down behaviour than the OF. We should really have a separate spin down timeout while connected setting...

As I wrote (or at least tried to), booting into Apple OS solves the problem.

But why is this only affecting the new v3.7 and not v3.6 and older?

Because 3.6 rebooted to the Apple disk mode for USB

Isn't 3.7 the first release with USB support on the Ipod Video?  My guess would be because you weren't using rockbox for USB before now.

Can't we just use the ipod firmware's setting?  It seems to work well enough for apple.

Okay thanks for the answers.
But is there a way on 3.7 to boot into Apples Recovery USB mode when connected to the computer instead of Rockbox? Without rebooting into Apple OS.

Should I write a bug report on it?

I'm sure there is.  Check the Apple documentation.  I think you have to hit some button for it.

No.

Nope, there isn't.

You'll need to do this manually each time you want to connect using Apple's disk mode by booting the player and quickly holding Select+Play to enter disk mode.

Why is it you want to do this, what is it that the Apple disk mode offers you that Rockbox USB does not?

EDIT: I re-read the thread...bloody strange that this makes a difference.

It is possible to re-assign a drive letter to your device if you think it having a different drive letter is really a big deal (it won't make a lick of functional difference though).

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Not really that strange, as gevaerts said we probably spin the disk down more quickly than the Apple OF, so when the PC requests more data there is a pause as the disk is spun up.
