iPod Nano 2G Runtime?
« on: November 07, 2010, 03:00:59 AM »
Hiyo, I was just wondering other rockbox users average runtime on the iPod Nano 2G.
I don't care about volume level, bitrate etc. as long as all you did was play a MP3 file and not use things like rockboy and mpeg player.

Reason I am asking this is because I am only getting 6-7 hours recently playing 128/192kbits MP3s.

When I first started using rockbox in february I was getting 8-9½.
That was while I was reading a text file and playing a 128kbits song at -45dB and no power saving settings expect brightness.

Yesterday I only got 5½ hours of battery life. I was like "wtf, my battery dieing?"
So, I uninstalled rockbox and went back to iTunes to see my battery life.
I've been running my iPod 5 hours and 5 minutes and I still have over half my battery. I do not think my battery is dieing.

My current rockbox config: http://pastie.org/1278713
Its from an older build but it should still be the same settings.
I use anywhere from -40-56dB, I never go above -40 and I only use 128/192kbits MP3s.
I always let my battery fully die then fully charge it. I do not read text files anymore, I only play my music.

If you go into the 2nd screen of the battery information in the debug menu, what battery current in mA do you see?

This isn't necessary with L-ion batteries, and depending who you listen to can apparently cause harm (but I'm not so sure personally).

You can basically just charge an L-ion battery whenever is convenient, be it at 10% or 90% charge.

"Power Cycling" was only necessary for nickel based batteries, and even then wasn't strictly "necessary" but helped to keep the battery in top condition.

I don't have rockbox on my iPod atm. I will get rockbox again after I wake up tomorrow.

Apple reccomends to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1726?viewlocale=en_US
I think it would help extend battery life. I know its not needed.

Half battery and its been almost 9 hours.

G4Oblivion, there was a submit by Michael Sparman which fixed an issue with USB-configuration. This bug could half the runtime on a nano 2G, if it was not connected/disconnected to USB before using it. The fix was submitted with r28261 on Oct., 12th. Are you using a version with or without the fix?
You can spot this issue when checking the battery current as described in my former post.

I believe you are incorrectly interpreting Apple:
Quote
You should charge iPod when it has fully discharged even if it won't be used right away.
They are saying not to store the iPod with a discharged battery, which is sound advice as self-discharge can then take the battery below safe voltage levels and kill it.  They are not saying to wait until full discharge to charge.

I update every other day so, I don't think that was the problem.

My bad, it seems I misunderstood.
