Best sounding (available!) Rockbox-Player?

Hmmmm my Nano 1 Gen. sounds definitely clearer, more open than the Clip+ (thats why its still my favourite)...altough it´s similar but not quite as good...e200v1 coming in "last".  Sure, its subtle when i tweak my settings to the Bass Heavy side but only the Nano can deliver these crisp Highs and Low Bass that I love so much. Iam looking for a possible alternative, cause 1 gen nanos are more and more maintenance oriented...Battery Life,Click Wheels etc.

But this isn't something worth caring about.

Why would all the supported mp3 players sound the same?

Because people figured out how to build a 16 bit, low power DAC correctly in the 1990s and nothing has really changed since then.
