Hard Drive Replacement IPod Video 5G
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:15:29 PM »
Hello,

I have read a lot about the possibility to replace the HDD in the Apple Ipod Video 5G

For example here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/HardDriveReplacement#1_8_Drive_Comparison

So I basically need a HDD with no Large Physical Sectors or one which does support unaligned reads and unaligned writes transparently in its firmware.

But most HDD listed aren't available anymore.

Can some please name me one which is available and everything else what is needed to do the replacement (thicker case, special tools etc.)

FYI I am living in Germany, so please dont just post a link to a seller like Raidrepair who has everything in store, although with high prices and expensive shipping costs.

Thx for any help.

Info: Rockbox is already running on the Ipod Video

Edit: The size of the HDD should be at least 80GB

If it's iPod video parts you're looking for, check out iFixit. They have plenty of replacement parts for iPods, including hard drives. I do believe that they ship internationally as well.

Thx, but the only hard drive they have with 80GB is the Toshiba MK8010GAH, which does not work with the Ipod Video 5G, according to Information available in the link I have posted above:

Quote
Drives with Large Physical Sectors that do not supported unaligned reads and unaligned writes transparently in the drive firmware may not work in certain devices. For example, MK1224GAH? and MK8010GAH? will NOT work in ipod video 5g ; whereas MK8010GAH? WILL work in ipod video 5.5G. There's a table at http://www.rapidrepair.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=2672 which lists a number of these combinations (although not all drives).

although this is an old post I figured I would add my info which may be well known any way

I have a 5th G ipod video 30 gig, needed a new battery after 4 years!!
chanced on this Apricorn product and purchased it, my 30gig ipod is now running a 120 gig disk and a new battery

had to get it from overseas but I recommend it.
FYI I would have rushed out and bought a new Ipod but the 6th gen I believe are not yet supported in rock box and there is no way I am going to use Itunes (ever), so this product solved all issues with a good instruction video and tools for opening the case

I have a similar issue.

I have two iPods.

Gen5 (5.5?) 30GB (Rockbox 3.8)
Gen6 120GB (Broken HDD)

I want to have the following:
Gen5 120GB(or higher)
Gen6 160GB(Or higher) (Gift for girlfriend)

Does anyone know what the details on ZIFs drives are? Am I able to put any ZIFs drive in and the iPod will run? Or do I have to go specific brands due to firmware lockdowns and the like?

What are my options, internet?

From what I remember when I repair iPods, the iPod video (Gen 5) can take any standard 1.8" ZIF connector hard drives. There are people here on the forums that have had success with hard drives up to 240GB in size.

As for the iPod Classic, you should be able to upgrade the hard drive, but you have to bear in mind that the older "fat" iPod Classic 160GB models use a CE-ATA interface on their hard drives. But, AFAIK the 80GB, 120GB, and the newer 160GB models are all ZIF connectors, so I don't see any reason why they won't accept hard drive upgrades.

Like everything else, your mileage may vary. And as a side note, it's quite a tricky job getting the iPod Classics opened up; Apple made the tabs that attach the front face to the back metal, and they *CLAMP*!

I've just upgraded my 5G 60GB to a 160GB disc. Bought a Toshiba MK1634GAL from ebay and works fine. As it's thinner going to try and fit a 30GB case to it and shrink my ipod at some point.

Got a 30gb case, new battery and headphone socket/lock switch and put it all together. Fits fine, looks like new and runs Rockbox.  8)
