Ipod Video 30gb Constant 'Connect to itunes to restore'

Hello all! 

I've been using Rockbox for a while now.  Its all been smooth sailing till last week.  I kept getting the "connect to itunes to restore error".  Sometimes in the past I would get that error and be able just to reset it (menu & select) and it worked.  Not soo lucky this time around.  So with that error, I did what it said.  Reinstalled the current Rockbox build.  It worked for about 2 days and then again, I'm back to the "connect to restore error".  Sometimes in the past I would get that error and be able just to reset it (menu & select) and it worked.

I have no idea what has toggled this error I keep getting.  I am almost thinking about going back to the ipod interface but its soo lame!  anyone have any ideas??  Thanks for your time!

Have you put the player into Apple's diagnostic mode to see what specifically the iPod believes is wrong with itself?

I did do a auto test.  I went through 8 tests...said diagnostics completed and that was it.  Was I suppose to get errors if there was probs?


Just did more tests, i found the HD info...it says i currently have 361 gb.  it would be cool to have that much but I should be only 30gb.  Does this hint towards anything?

It suggests that your file system is badly corrupted.  Try connecting to your PC in disk mode and fixing the problem.

Well today (saturday) I had to go and work a little, so I decided not to install rockbox this time around and see if it works with the original ipod software.  Did a restore, added about 4 cds and then headed out.  Before I got the equipment off the trailer it froze up.  Did a restart and got the same 'reconnect to restore error.'  So this wasn't a rockbox problem.  Its something wrong with the actual ipod or storage card.

I ordered up a new mobo for it.  Hopefully that will fix it.  Any other ideas?

It definitely sounds like a hardware problem.  Let us know how the replacement turns out for you.  I guess it's possible that the problem lies in the HD itself, so if this doesn't work then that would be the first factor I would examine.

Well years ago, I swapped out the HD for a flash card.  So if the mobo replacement fails me, then its a new flash card, if that doesn't work. well then damnit im just going to go out and buy an am/fm radio!!

Lets wrap this bad boy up!  After replacing the mobo on the ipod same, I had the same problem.  Only thing left was the CF card.  A trip to microcenter 15 minutes before close, I walked out with a new flash card and im back in business!!

Almost seems worthwhile to pick up some more parts and make use of the new mobo.
