USB Charging while in use
« on: February 10, 2006, 02:16:06 PM »
I was wondering if there are plans to make it so we can charge the ipod via USB whille listening.
That would be handy.  As of now, if I plug the usb cable into the ipod and into a computer or the usb charging plug from Apple, the unit reboots and if its attached to a computer it goes into disk mode, or if its attached to the USB charger cable, it just goes to a screen with a usb plug symbol on it and I can't get to any menus.
Thanks again to the developers for all their hard work!

Hold down the MENU button as you insert the USB cable.

I found out that when I plug in an external USB charger on a Rockbox based iPod the iPod reboots and keeps rebooting until I unplug the charger.
With the original Apple firmware this problem does not occur.
Holding the MENU button (as I read in this topic) while plugging in prevents this but is it still charging ?

Anyone familiar with this problem ?

IT is not a problem, it's a function. Yes it does charge when you hold down the menu button and plug it in. It's just the way that it is, if you use the iipl bootloader or( idon't think rockboxbootloadeR) it reboots into diskmode.

Take Care,
Jon

I think when one connects the iPod to a PC you are right this is really very useful to keep listening to music.
But when connecting to an external USB power supply I don't think it is a 'function' that the iPod repeatedly reboots.
Maybe Rockbox cannot detect whether the iPod is connected to a power supply or a computer ?

Furthermore Rockbox is great software !

I know its says 'USB" Charging BUT if you have an old fire wire powersupply from a MAC third gen or older ipod, this can be used quite successfully -- and your "new" rockbox ipod wont reboot

Use this for overnight charging  ;D

There are manuals available that explain the many features of rockbox. Keep in mind though, it's not 100% complete at the moment, but feel free to make a post of some edits at the patch tracker if you feel that needed information is not included/have information that you think should be added.
Just go to http://www.rockbox.org/daily.shtml and choose the manual link for your iPod.

This problem has been addressed in many threads. Just do a search on external usb power. Rockbox for Ipod does not have a proper USB mode right now and that is why it reboots.

hmm, I've never had a problem with this. SO when you hold down menu when you insert it, it still does this?

One more slightly longer way is first connect your iPod. Then if you are using iTunes just eject the pod using it. If you are using Anapod Explorer then right click the tray icon and select eject.

After this action the iPod will display the main menu and battery charging will be on. I am used to doing this only, I never knew the holding of menu button trick. Thanks for this new trick if will surely try it.

Regards.

In Windows, you can eject from explorer (or my computer) too. Just right-click on the drive.
