crash to apple logo on iPod photo
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:02:47 PM »
I had a sconce through the iPod photo posts and didn't come across this problem. I just installed Rockbox for the first time on my iPod photo 60GB, all seemed to be going well, after all elements installed (following automatic and complete install) I ejected it and unplugged it. At this stage, the apple sign came on and stayed bright. I then held down Select and Menu for a couple of seconds to force a boot. It booted up into the apple sign, which stayed bright again. Holding it up to my ear I could hear the drive whirring. This was an hour ago. It is still in the same state. I've also tried holding down Play, this does nothing. I haven't a clue what to do now. Very grateful for any help! Mark

Sounds like it might be worth setting the ipod to disk mode and try reinstalling rockbox.

(from the manual: "Hard reset the player by pressing and holding the Menu and Select  buttons simultaneously. As soon as the player resets, press and hold the Select  and Play buttons simultaneously. Your player should enter disk mode and you can try reconnecting to the computer." http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-ipodcolor/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-70002.1 )

Thanks for replying Evil Nick. I'll have a go at this when I get back home, but I don't hold out much hope - when I reboot the player there doesn't seem to be much of a gap between reboot and the apple sign coming back on again. I'll let you know how I get on.

Best wishes,

Mark

The Ipods have a built-in disk mode (also called "emergency disk mode" sometimes). You can always access this emergency disk mode, unless you actually have a hardware failure. To access it you need to reset the Ipod first (pressing and holding Menu + Select until it reboots), then immediately tell it to enter disk mode (pressing and holding Play + Select). This way you can always recover an Ipod in case of a broken install. Note that you need to reset the Ipod again to exit emergency disk mode.

Thank you Blue Brother and Evil Nick. Your advice was good, and my iPod is now in disk mode. My plan is to manually install the Rockbox bootloader, as I think is the part of the install most likely to have gone wrong (I can see the .rockbox folder sitting in the root folder of the iPod, which suggests to me that the firmware is installed OK). Again, I'll let you know how it goes.

Best wishes,

Mark

There shouldn't be a need to install the bootloader manually (you can install it selectively using Rockbox Utility). Since Rockbox Utility uses the same code ipodpatcher does the result is expected to be the same. If something went wrong just reinstall it and you're should be good.
