iAudio x5. not recording, but not hardware problem
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:00:10 PM »
I have an iAudio X5  60GB
My problem is with recording.  I hear noise when I turn the gain all the way up, but the microphone isnt picking up anything, even when I tap it.  The peak meters don't pick up anything either.
I tried switching format settings, bitrate...etc.
I even plugged in the black piece and tried to do "line in" recording, but got the same problem with just less noise (thus it can't be my hardware).
It does, however, record the FM radio.
And yes, I was very careful to choose the correct source.  When doing line in, I switched the source to line in.  When using the mic, I switched the source to mic.  Still nothing.
I checked to see that the trigger was off.  Still won't record anything.

I seem to be having the same exact problem as this guy on the forums.  But the post was so old that it warned me to post a new topic instead of replying.

I have the latest version of rockbox, 3.6 .  I tried re-installing the original cowon iAudio firmware, and it does the same thing even outside the rockbox firmware.  Both line in and microphone dont record anything.
I have 1.68 GB free, so that should be plenty of memory for recording.

Any help?  thanks.  Recording is something that would be really useful to me as I use it to take notes about different things throughout the day.  I hope there is a fix to this without having to send it in to cowon.

Since the problem occurs in Rockbox and in the Cowon firmware why do you believe you do not have a hardware problem?

i thought that since the problem occurs in both line in and in mic, that there was a very slim chance that my line in and my mic would break at the same time.

So perhaps the hardware problem doesn't involve the line-in and mic-in sockets but something else that's only used for recording.

The fact that the hardware exhibits the same behavior in both firmwares is a fairly strong indication that it is a hardware problem.  As evilnick says, a different piece of hardware in the recording chain could be broken (like the ADC, for example).
