Ipod nano 1st gen 2GB Not booting up
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:57:26 AM »
Hey guys ,

I've been using my ipod nano first gen , with rockbox installed to jailbreak my ps3 for the past 3-4 days and it has been working flawlessly. Today when i tried turning it on , though , the ipod screen was black ( but not lit ) and it was just staying that way. I reseted it using menu + center and then it just went blank.

Now it doesn't respond to resetting it , or trying to turn it on by pressing play. It's currently plugged in the pc via USB but no message regarding charging is being displayed.

Any ideas about what i could do , anyone ?

Oh yeah , forgot to mention . The pc hasn't reacted when i plugged the ipod in , via usb. Also , i'm quite a noob about this sort of thing , so if anyone has even a simple solution please mention it , because i probably didn't think of it ^_^.

The PS Jailbreak modification is not Rockbox code, and we don't know enough about it to support it.

That said "Now it doesn't respond to resetting..."
The Menu+Select reset is at a hardware level.  If it is not working one has a hardware issue (count having a dead battery in this category).

Well , i suspect it's not the psjailbreak to blame for all of this , just because people have not been reporting issues with their ipods ( afaik ) after using it.

Is there anyway to bypass the battery , and just power it up using the usb or charger ?

The ipod automatically powers on when connected via the dock connector to anything that provides power. If that doesn't happen then it's probably already powered on but has crashed/hung.

Are you resetting it properly? Turn the hold switch on and then off again, then hold menu and select together for as long as it takes; this is occasionally more than 30 seconds. Do it while plugged in, as well.

If that still doesn't work then the only explanation I can think of is that the battery is deep discharged and the power management chip is refusing to turn it on until it's okay again, which means you may need to leave it plugged in to charge for several hours minimum. No message or anything will be displayed because the processor is turned off still. Once the battery level reaches an acceptable point it will automatically boot.

Thank you so much for your replies ! Will try what you said now !

Later edit : Well it's been plugged in to the PC for about 4 hours now and it's still a no go . I'll leave the pc on over night , hoping for a miracle , but things are starting to look particularly grim me thinks >,>

Thanks for all your help guys , and if you can think of anything else , don't hesitate to post please.

i have the same problem as you described aevis.

when i installed rockbox, everything worked fine for a day, but now the ipod won't start up again. i tried resetting it by pressing menu+select, but that didn't work. when i plug it in via the usb cable, the pc doesn't recognize the ipod, like it isn't even plugged in.

my ipod is also a nano 1st gen. 2gb version.

Found this thread : http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=16880.0

Basically what they say is that given enough time ( charging or not ) the problem will fix itself >,>

That said , the ipod has been plugged in to my pc for the past 12 hours and nothing has changed >,>

Later edit : After about 12-16 hours charging and 24 hours just sitting , when i plugged it in just now , the screen flashed , and there was some activity but i didn't get to read anything. It also flashed when attempting a reset , but afterwards it got unresponsive again
:|

I'll leave it plugged in some more >,>
