Ipod Video 30g can't boot to either firmware
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:37:41 AM »
I have the above iPod and about 1 week ago loaded rockbox via the installer.  It was working fine until last night when I was adding some music.  I was nearing the capacity of the hard drive but don't think I exceeded it when all of a sudden it disconnected from my computer and tried to reboot.  I then got a bootloader error which advised to put it into disk mode.  I tried booting back to apple firmware and it hangs until the battery goes dead.  FYI - I installed from the installer using MAC OSX (current version).  The ipod was fat32 formatted using a Windows PC.  Any assistance correcting this issue would be greatly appreciated.  I apologize in advance if this is a common occurrence.  I searched this forum for related issue but didn't find anything quite like what I am experiencing.

Recharge the battery, return to apple disk mode, and then try to reformat it.

return to apple disk mode

Thanks.  I'll try this when I get home.  When you say "return to apple disk mode" are you talking about when the bootloader tells me to push the select and play buttons simultaneously?

If so, I tried that last night but, when I plugged it into my mac via usb I got a message to the effect of "disk not recognized".  Do I need to try this within Windows?

Apple's instructions on entering Disk Mode:

If you still have problems, it might be worth running some tests with Apple's diagnostic mode.

It also tells you to reboot first.. hold select and menu to reset then as soon as the apple logo appears, hold select and play.

Edit: If you have the most recent bootloader, which you should do if you installed Rockbox a week ago, then you can just plug the USB cable in and it should automatically restart to disk mode from the bootloader error screen.

Thanks to all for your assistance and advise.  I was able to get into disk mode and although I had difficulty, was able to reformat and reinstall.   For some reason I couldn't reformat in windows even from a command prompt.  I was able to reformat to fat via Mac disk utility. Then iTunes in windows recognized the drive and did a restore.  From there I reinstalled rockbox.

All is well now. Thanks!
