Tell me if there is a better forum than this for this subject.

For the longest time I have had Rockbox installed on my Sanda e280.  I just updated it a couple of weeks ago.  After that I connected my wife's Sansa e260 (I tihink - it's the 4GB model, has v1.x firmware).  I had added a micro SD card to hers so I plugged it in to check.

It gave me the H: drive and the M: drive, where the M: drive is the SD card.  Mine would also connect and map to the H: drive.

So today I went to connect mine and it doesn't show up.  So I take it out and the H and M drives show.  So I plug it back in and they go away.  We do this dance for a while and I just leave it connected.  After a while (5 min) it might connect  and if it does it will give me the H and M drive (mine doesn't have the micro SD card so no reason for the M drive).

Not sure what to do to fix this, it is very slow moving files when it does connect.

Any ideas?

Try booting the original firmware and see if it also has problems with USB.

It also sounds like it could be a bad/flaky cable.

I just tried a different cable, no luck.

I also tried a different USB port, no luck.

I think it has to do with the USB mapping that is stored in the registry or WMI somewhere.  I think if I have my Sansa map to a different drive than H, it might work better.  Not sure where that info is stored to try.

...

OK, so I found the registry key and deleted it and I think it got me closer to understanding the problem (hopefully some rockbox developers are looking at this).

After I deleted the reg key and plugged the unit back in, the drivers installed again as they did in the past (when I first plugged in the unit) only it seemed take longer.  It took longer because it also installed the drivers for the micro SD card slot even though 1) there is no card in the slot and 2) this unit has never had a card in the slot.  So something (Rockbox software or maybe the Sansa firmware) thinks my Sansa is my wife's Sansa where the micro SD card maps to the M drive.  The models are slightly different as well.

I guess it isn't a big deal, I think if I install a 4 GB micro SD card it will fix the sluggishness of it connecting and transferring files.

Does the original firmware exhibit the same behavior?

Yeah, when I booted to the Sansa software that came with the player there was no change in the way the connection acted.
