Thats actually in c, no c++, but I don't think its GPL so you probably can't use it with rockbox.

"License:  zlib/libpng License"

That doesn't say GPL. On the plus side, I believe it is GPL compatible.

The files I looked at said "License: PDS".  No idea what that means.

Ah yeah, that's pretty problematical. Licensing must be explicit.

okay here goes answer:
http://offgao.no-ip.org/bbs/test/read.cgi/offgao/1124214003/l50

Google translate:
I checked, PDS (Public domain software), the software that was available on the waiver of a copyright
PDS License, then I'd like can be freely distributed with the modified source code.

If it is indeed and truly public domain, then perhaps you can start studying it a bit more and snipping out the bits that you want.

For the record, there's already a GBS codec in Flyspray (FS#7331), but it needs a major reworking in order to be fully functional. With this codec, GBS tracks play, but they sound pretty awful.

Also, as I've noticed that you've mentioned in your first post that this engine also supports HES tracks (Hudson Entertainment System Sound Format; TG-16/PCE chiptunes), you may want to have a gander at this page: http://namida.com/kaminarimon/hes/archive_players.htm
