Is Rockbox Stable, and which remotes does it work with?
« on: September 29, 2010, 10:42:53 AM »
I've recently been planning to purchase an iPod as a music player for small to large magic shows. I was planning to get a Nano 4g/5g, as they're they only models with crossfading, but now I see the Rockbox firmware has crossfade as well.

So a whole bunch of questions:

1. How stable is Rockbox compared to the normal iPod firmware? Stability is probably the most important point, since I'd really like to avoid any problems before or during a show.

2. Which remote controls is Rockbox compatible with? Ideally, I'd like to use an iJet or iJet NAV.

3. What's Rockboxes crossfading like, and how does it compare to the Nano's crossfade?

4. Is it possible to have both the Rockbox and standard iPod firmware on the same unit, so either can be loaded?

Thanks very much!

1)  On which device?
2)  Theres a list of tested ones on the wiki, take a look at it
3)  No idea.
4)  Yes, see the manual.

First off, the nano 4th or 5th gen aren't supported, check the front page to see the iPod models that are supported.
This makes the questions below a little harder to answer (!)

1. This depends on which player you have. I've used an iPod Video extensively and found it to be as stable as the OF.

2. Have a look at this page: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodAccessories as that shows what accessories work and to what extent with iPods.

3. The iPod Video manual: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch7.html#x10-1290007.8 describes how configurable Rockbox's options are. I haven't used the nano OF so have no idea how Apple do it but I'd be very surprised if they provide as much flexibility.

4. Absolutely.

Thanks :)

Which players are the most stable out of the iPods? Which ever people recommend is the one I'll shop for (if it happens to be one of the cheaper types, that would be even better).

I'll try asking about and see if I can find someone who uses Rockbox and owns an iJet, since it unfortunately isn't listed on the wiki. If I don't have any luck with that though, I'll start researching the remotes that are listed already.

Stability?  3rd, 4th (color or greyscale) or 5th gen full-sized or either of the Minis would rank first.
Nano 1st gen has some RAM issues which affect some people some times.
Nano 2nd gen has its own issues for some people, but are really too complicated to discuss in short, but rarely deal-breakers.
Full-sized 1st and 2nd gen are likely undesirable for most for a variety of reasons, if you've got your heart set on one (which I doubt) we can discuss that  in depth as well.
