unable to install bootloader on cowon x5 - with data sync cable
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:33:10 PM »
i used the 1.2.8 installation utility. at the end i do safely remove, then the player turns off, then i reconect the cable. nothing happens on the pc so i push the OK button.

when trying to boot the x5 i get the normal firmware.

when retrying the installation i am told the bootloader is allready there.

what did i do wrong?

--

i think the problem is in my gomadic cable (data and charging together). the last step is to insert the charger but i have this sync/power cable so its not exactly what i need to start the bootloader flashing.
i did plug the cable also into an usb charger instead of pc but this does not help.

any ideas?

oh crap, according to the pinout:

http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3105&highlight=individual+cables&page=6

the charger uses separate pins as the usb. means i need really need to charge it via the original charger, which i do not have.

As far as I know (I don't own an X5, but I'm pretty sure of this) it's important to connect the charger, not USB. I don't think a USB charger will do. If you only connect power (via USB) it won't flash the bootloader, hence you can't boot Rockbox. Rockbox Utility will (correctly) state that the bootloader is already present. That is due to the fact that there is no way to figure if a bootloader has been flashed, and if the bootloader file is present on the player (AFAIK flashing will delete that file) it has to assume that the bootloader is present.

finally i did it. i could not find anybody with an original charger, so i did dismantle the gomadic sync cable and noticed that pins 21,22 are connected with usb pins 7,8 and that the power from the jack leads to pins 21,22 only.

all i did was cutting the 21,22 and 7,8 connection. pluged in and the flash was successfull.

now i can play with replacing the harddrive for a flashdrive.
