Sansa Fuze v1 bootloop when plugged in USB
« on: September 24, 2010, 11:53:24 AM »
Hey guys,
This is my first post. I am interested in using rockbox on my fuze. I downloaded the automatic installer...it kept failing on autodetect in windows so i switched to my linux machine and it found the player fine. Did the install, i gave it the firmware .bin file it requested, oh by the way my player is in MSC(?) mode from the original sansa fw, and the install went fine.

Now when i plug it in to any  computer via usb it just boot loops. You see the rockbox splash screen, then the light from the wheel comes on, then the it boots in to the player, then it restarts. I let it try for 15 minutes or so. If i quickly press the select key several times when it boots in to the player i can manage to get in to the player without it rebooting, but it just shows up as an unrecognized usb device. Can't do anything.

I ended up holding clicking left on the wheel when booting and went back in to original sansa firmware (thank god, i thought it was useless) and it works just fine from there. I verified that i was in the correct USB mode and tried again on both machines to the same results.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

What version/revision of Rockbox are you using?  USB support in Rockbox was only enabled since Rockbox 3.6.  If you using Rockbox 3.6 either update to a current build to use USB from within Rockbox or boot into the original firmware if you need a USB connection.

So, why not install the current build instead?

If you're compiling your own builds it doesn't matter which one you install with rbutil.  You're just going to remove it as soon as you make a build.

I do have the most current build of rb installed, 3.6, correct? If it supports usb, then why does it keep looping when i plug it in?

It is the most recent release, but it happened at the end of May.  A huge number of changes have happened since then, including USB support for your player.  Did you read the MajorChanges link I posted earlier?

Anyway, if you're checking out the current trunk to do development work then all of this is moot.  As saratoga said, it doesn't matter what firmware is installed on your player currently if you plan to make your own build and install that.

EDIT: Rockbox 3.6 is NOT the most current build.  The current build is presently r28156.

one more question, if i install a version i compile from source, the original sansa firmware will still be accessible by holding left on the click pad by default right?

Yes.

NOTE: You don't have to compile the current build yourself. Look here: http://build.rockbox.org/
