Clip+ with firmware 01.02.15A
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:47:46 AM »
Hello,

Just today I purchased a new Clip+, but it has a newer firmware 01.02.15A and rockbox installer complains:
Code: [Select]
[ERR]  Original firmware unknown, please try an other version. Tested Clip+v1 versions are : 01.02.09, 01.02.13, 01.02.15

What should I do now, downgrade?

It doesn't matter what firmware version you have installed, just what firmware version you provide to the installer.  Just give it one of those versions and it should work (no matter what you have installed on your player).

Well, how could I know that :) Maybe I should have said that I use "Rockbox Utility" instead of installer, 'cause it asked me for a bootloader file, not a firmware.

Now I downloaded the original sandisk 01.02.15 firmware, extracted, and there are two files: clpp_data.dat (5.4MB) and clppa.bin (15MB). Which one is what?

UPD: I made it :) it needed clppa.bin.

UPD2: Hm, I installed both bootloader and rockbox itself, no errors or whatsoever. But after reboot it loads the original sandisk firmware. I also tried to run RockboxUtility with sudo as it complained previously:
Code: [Select]
[ERR]  FATAL: Permission denied on 4 device(s) and no sansa detected.
[ERR]  You need permissions for raw disc access for this program to work!

then properly dismounted clip+. In the root of clip clppa.bin and .rockbox/ appeared, so I suppose installation went ok. Still, it doesn't load rockbox.

I wonder if I should try mkamsboot.

UPD3: Finlay I made it manually with mkamsboot  :P

Assuming the installer that is not rockbox utility is mkamsboot, it actually asked you for both.

If it reboots into the Sandisk firmware, then you didn't install the bootloader.  From your description I have no idea what you did.  Explain the steps and the software you used and I can tell you what to do.

Sorry, I forgot that installer != RButil. So, after I read that
Code: [Select]
Fuzev2/Clip+: Some models won't patch with RButil 1.2.7. Use mkamsboot.

I went with mkamsboot and successfully installed rockbox manually.

I've searched everywhere.  Where in the heck is the .bin file?  I can find the Updater but don't think I want that ... but bin file not identified.  Thank you.

Do to legal issues, the firmware bin file cannot be hosted by Rockbox.  You have to get the bin file from the Sandisk forum.  The link is supplied by the Rockbox Utility, in the install section of the manual for your device, and on the SansaAMS wiki page.

The ROCKbox installer currently expects a maximum of 01.02.15; the version that sansa give is the 01.02.15A version, so the installer won't install. It doesn't expect the letter a.

The sansa support page gives you 01.02.15A.  I don't see any way to get the 'pre-a' version from the sansa website.  :(

Since the ROCKbox installer requires an older firmware version, i decided to find the older sansa firmware and downgrade. I  googled for "01.02.13" and found this link: http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Clip-Clip/Sansa-Clip-Firmware-Update-01-02-13/td-p/147726, which had a download for the 1.02.13 release: http://mp3support.sandisk.com/firmware/clipplus/clipplus01.02.13.zip.

I unzipped the download,  pointed the ROCKbox installer to the clppa.bin file (which was extracted from the zip) and then successfully installed ROCKbox.

Along the way i had  manually installed the 1.02.13 firmware, actually a downgrade; this was, in retrospect, probably unnecessary.

But, my clip+ now has ROCKbox, making it a simply perfect audiobook player! I have it  automatically bookmarking, and automatically resuming so it plays automatically on startup where i left off- great for audiobooks. ROCKbox took  a great player and made it darn near perfect. You folks are awesome. :D

Btw, compusa currently (4/2011) has refurbished sansa clipplus 4gb for $30. (No affiliation, just happy with the price.) I'll pickup a few more and have one dedicated for music, one for the car, one for my audiobooks, etc.

I've checked the link that's on the SansaAMS wiki page and can download a file clipplus01.02.15.zip and Rockbox Utility accepts this file just fine.

I installed Rockbox on my SansaClip+ and all is good.  Great player.  I'd have to say that I overall I prefer the interface on my iAudio 7, but the touch controls on that stopped working several months ago, and the SansaClip+ hasn't.  The sound is great and very nice to carry.  And the Rockbox interface really makes it a nice player to use.
