Possible Hearing Aid Function
« on: September 12, 2010, 01:15:34 PM »
If it hasn't already been done or already shot down - would it be possible to add a "hearing aid" function to Rockbox for targets that have a microphone? I'm thinking it's a simple as turning on record, but instead having it immediately playback. I thought maybe this could help the hearing impaired....

Entering record screen enables automatically loopback (what's recorded is also sent to the headphones), at least on the Sansas

This also works on the Archos Recorder V2.   The 5G iPod has loopback but it doesn't have a microphone, so an external microphone and preamp is required.

Now, I suppose if I asked I'm going to be told it's already possible - but the Microphone can be set to only take certain volume levels right - if I were to say use this in school - could I set it up so it would take the voices, and hopefully I could make out the teachers lecture live and even boost the sound?

There is a volume trigger feature for recording but to separate out voices form other sounds you need to post process the audio with some kind of filter which rockbox doesn't have.

The equalizer could help reduce noise and make voices easier to understand.  However, it can only be used when playing back the recorded audio.  When the microphone signal is being monitored via headphones, that is a direct analog connection.  Rockbox cannot process the audio going to the headphones.

Thanks guys, I noticed that it works for a decent hearing aid - I can boost the sound around me, but then the mic is also sensitive enough to pick up things like me moving the scrollwheel while I can't make it focus on more "outer" sounds.

Yes, case sounds will be picked up.  The only things you could do about that is to attach a more appropriate type external microphone (easy to hard depending on the DAP in question) or attempt to dampen the sounds of the DAP's shell.

@Soap, so saying we're referring to a Sansa Fuze (v2)?

I think you would have to open up the player and solder in leads for an external mic.
