what format does the album art need to be in and what does it need to be named (folder.jpg?) in order to show up in rockbox or pictureflow? 

also, is there a way to have it shown during playback?

short answer, just name it cover.jpg or folder.jpg and pick/download a theme which displays album art, there are many
