iPod Video (5.5g) can be upgraded to 240GB easy.

Know where I would get HDs and research compatibility for it? Upgrading the hd never really came to mind, as the ipod isn't exactly meant to be user serviceable, and that I would probably have to use some apple only tool to format the new hd.

Also, I would switch to something non-apple if I could, but those android players seem like overkill and I am a bit used to the simplicity of the ipods controls.

I bought this to upgrade to 240GB: http://www.apricorn.com/product_detail.php?type=family&id=42

Apricorn has a lower price than many.  The iPod Video 5.5g isn't a difficult disassembly.  Apricorn supplies the tools.  I didn't need them.  Careful use of *strong* fingernails can accomplish the task of separating the front panel and back cover.  Just be careful not to flex the ZIF drive ribbon cable too much as the traces can break.  Apricorn supplies a spare drive cable, just in case and also a new, large capacity battery.  Not a bad deal.  Just be certain the ipod has the larger 80gb back to accommodate the drive thickness.
