Screen video recorder
« on: September 09, 2010, 02:20:20 AM »
Would it be possible to have a plugin that records a video of what is going on on the screen? This would be useful in spotting bugs and posting video reviews of Rockbox on YouTube. Thanks!

Use a simulator and a screen capture tool like CamStudio for your video reviews. :)

I personally doubt that any DAP will be able to record video of its own screen without nearly grinding to a halt from the load.

I'd suggest Wink for lightweight video captures. I'd like to see its free (open) equivalent though.

I would think that the only DAP that could even possibly handle the most beginning aspects of a video recorder plugin would be something like a Gigabeat S/F/X. Maybe an iPod Video - but I really don't think anything below that could possibly handle such a prospect. As Strife said, you're much better off using the simulator.

The ipod video has the same CPU (speed wise) as most of the other ipods, sansas, etc. - a dual core 80 MHz chip.

I think the Video has more RAM though...

The 60/80GB videos have 64MB of RAM.  All the other iPods have 32MB, plenty.

It should be very easy to do, and the bottleneck is not the CPU in any way.

Just use plain old bitmaps and you'll only be limited by storage speed.

Clip @25fps needs 25kbps
ipod video @25fps needs 3.66mbps
ipod video @5fps needs 732kbps

You can find plenty of tools to do the encoding of bitmaps to a real movie with your PC

Then what about at least improving the screendump feature. It atakes almost 15 to complete taking the picture.

Feel free, it isn't exactly high priority.
