Assuming you're running a Fuze of Clip, its due to lack of enough RAM on your player to load the entire map.

Thx and yes I'm on a fuze. But I don't understand why it can load huge maps in doom 2 but not freedoom?

Random guess:  because freedom uses more RAM then your player has.

Yes I know but why would doom 2 not use the same amount of ram?

If you design your own map, textures, sounds, etc., it is unlikely that it will come out to exactly the same size as either of these two WADs.  It shouldn't be surprising if one WAD is larger than another since size is not a characteristic that the creators selected for.

Not good. I'm a huge fan of doom, was just about to post a thread about it. So what can we do to fix it? Maybe load the map in parts? Games like Halo use it. But darn, will it require a rewrite of the level?

Improve doom to use less memory.

Or if you are really ambitious you could give this a try http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=25547.0

During the night I was thinking... How about allocating a swap area?
