Bricked iPod Nano 2nd Gen
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:10:06 AM »
So here's what I did. Downloaded iTunes 10, updated my iPod Nano 2nd Gen, installed Rockbox.

Rockbox ran, it was as advertised, which was flaky. So I ran the uninstaller. The uninstall was successful so I ejected my iPod then unplugged. Now it is providing a "cannot load rockbox.ipod: file cannot be found", "ATA error: 1"... and yes I mean "one" not -1 as what the wiki shows as a possible error code :(

It has a full charge, I have tried resetting it... which just ends back at the error screen. Also have tried connecting it to multiple PCs and one Mac. Each time it doesn't even prompt for a disk drive or iTunes no matter if it is plug in play or attached with reboot. I have checked for it in the devices for any failed driver installs and nothing is even being added to the list when it is connected much less giving an error.

Any ideas?

Just to make sure, you uninstalled the boot loader right?

Did you try booting into the OF? (Read manual)
Did you try booting into Disk Mode? (Read manual)

Its pretty freaking hard to brick an iPod unless you intentionally do it.

Tried both, it reboots fine with OF but goes back to the same error screen. However Disk just doesn't respond at all.

The uninstall showed that it completed, which I trusted what it said. But it seems as if it left the bootloader with nothing now to boot too.

I could fix this if I could just get it to be recognized by a computer via restore in iTunes I am sure of, but without that I'm at a loss.

It should be recognized when its in disk mode or OF.
Download this and press "u" to uninstall the boot loader. (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodPatcher)

If your computer doesn't recognize it try plugging it into another computer.
If it still isn't recognized you can try uninstalling your USB controllers (I don't recommend) (Win only)
The divers should be reinstalled once the computer reboots. I have done this once and it worked but I don't like taking chances. More information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575

I uninstalled all usb drivers as suggested on a laptop (the desktop's list was just far too long to go thru). rebooted and iPod showed nothing different.

I went back to the desktop, nothing... later rebooted it and it finally accepted. Don't ask me why, nothing changed from my first post until now on that machine.

Anyway, I did a factory reset and it's back to normal. Thanks so much for your help. Brick wasn't so brick like after all.

Just to add a bit of closure - bricking an iPod is near impossible.

I also thought I had bricked my ipod, but has the member above says it's impossible to brick it.
The problem I had was with iLoader that's a boot loader to ipod nano 2g and I uninstalled it the wrong way too and could not get it to boot/recover with itunes but they provided me a solution. I don't remember but you can always boot it in usb mode pressing some buttons.

Tell them what happened in irc chat and I'm sure they will help you.

EDIT:
I'm not sure, but maybe hold turn on/off and menu+play after that (do this with usb cable plugged)
