Cannot play OMA file Hi-MD
« on: September 01, 2010, 04:59:31 PM »
I can't play this file on my ipod Photo 30GB with the latest Rockbox 3.6
It's recorded with my Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD minidisc recorder in Hi-SP format (Linear PCM 1.4 MBPS)
It doesn't open.

It's uploaded here:

I don't think PCM in OMA is supported.  Why not convert it to a more sensible format, like FLAC or even WAV?

Yes, that's possible. But what is the purpose of Rockbox supporting more formats than mp3. Just so you don't have to convert before play.
And if i convert to wav the file will be huge. Didn't try FLAC because my other mp3 players won't support that.

WAV is 1.4 Mbps PCM. Converting from 1.4Mbps PCM to 1.4Mbps PCM shouldn't result in a significant size change outside of possible differences in container efficiency.

I think you're the first person to ever ask about it.  OMA is already a dead format, so you'll probably also be the last to ask about it too.  That means its pretty much up to you to add support for it if you want to use it.  Otherwise just use something normal like FLAC/WAV.

You said your file is PCM Hi-SP, which doesn't really make sense since they're different formats.  If its really PCM, then it won't get any bigger since its already raw PCM which is as big as a file can get.  If its Hi-SP, then it'll get bigger, but theres nothing you can do about it since Hi-SP is a proprietary format with no known specification or decoder source, so its impossible to play on anything but a few Sony devices IIRC.

Ran it through HiMD renderer. Now it's a flac file but not handy. Has now a 89% compression rate, and is 80 mb instead of 90. Maybe another FLAC renderer is better.

Which OMA formats are supported in the OMA container that Rockbox can play?
Only normal Minidisc SP format?

I think just ATRAC3.  Not sure what SP is.  If its not ATRAC3, it won't work.

Edit:  google suggests that SP is ATRAC1, which is not supported.
