Solved: Rockbox crashes when Pictureflow is started via WPS Hotkey
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:21:05 AM »
Hi.

With my Cowon D2 I got some problems with the WPS Hotkey.

Whenever I jump to Pictureflow via WPS Hotkey and jump back Rockbox crashes.

If I start Pictureflow via Plugins-Demos-Pictureflow and jump via Tracklist to the WPS rockbox does not crash.
So I guess it's a problem with the WPS Hotkey and it's no problem of the Pictureflow plugin...?

Is anybody using the WPS Hotkey option to jump into Pictureflow and has the same problems (eventually with another DAP)?

The Bug is filed here:

Hi
I get exactly the same issue with my iPod Nano 2nd Gen.
Via the WPS, PictureFlow opens OK, but when we want to go back to the WPS from inside PictureFlow (using any of the ways to do it), Rockbox crashes: the theme backdrop is shown, but no content on the screen. The DAP needs to be forcefully restarted (using Select+Menu) to be able to use it again.

This does not happen when we open PictureFlow via the Demos menu.
I'm using build r27944-100830.

EDIT: I don't think this thread is in the correct section, if this applies please someone with power to should move it.

I get exactly the same issue with my iPod Nano 2nd Gen.
<snip>
I'm using build r27944-100830.
<snip>

I'm using r27958 and several Nano2Gs (3 Nano2G 2GB and 3 Nano2G 4GB) and cannot reproduce this, interesting.
(I do however, have a small change to my pictureflow.c file that allows pictureflow to run at a reasonable speed on the Nano2G again (It was dramitically affected by the WPS integration patch), I wonder if that has something to do with it.)

Have you tried using a more current build? I realise your build isn't *that* old...but still, worth a try.

PS: Yes, this is in the wrong section, however, I thought I'd still comment with the knowlegde that it will almost certainly be moved to the appropriate section.

EDIT:

Gah! Bloody typical! I had tried to reproduce this *soooo* many times, and couldn't...now I can reproduce it every time without fail.

However, it is slightly different for me.
I can enter the pictureflow plugin from the .wps fine, and browse the tracklists in pictureflow fine, I can even exit pictureflow fine...unlike gbl08ma.

I can't however, launch playback from within pictureflow when it is entered from the .wps...it is then that I get the "undefined instruction" error (always at a different address).

Well, I played around a bit without changing the build (I'm using r27944-100830). Here's what I've seen:

If we are on the WPS and press the hotkey (previously set to PictureFlow), it opens the PictureFlow and everything seems OK.
When I press the Play key to go back to the WPS, it shows the theme skin base, but without any menu content or title (the viewport area is empty). However, things like the volume, battery, shuffle and repeat indicators are shown, however they are stuck (e.g. volume doesn't update). The disk activity indicator is shown, and never disappears - however, I don't hear the sound that my iPod makes when it is reading the disk, so I don't think there's any activity. I don't see anything related to "undefined instruction". Things show up this way at least with the photoSkins-Orange theme I've ported to iPod nano, but the issue is common to other themes too.

Then I reset the iPod using the key combination (Menu+Select).

If we are on the WPS, and go to the PictureFlow, and exit out of it by selecting another track, exactly the same thing I described above happens. Still no "undefined instruction".

I reset the iPod again...

Now, when I opened PictureFlow from the hotkey, for some reason it started preparing the album artwork... but it gets stuck with the progress bar only filled by 4 pixels. Here I go resetting it again... :)
This time, PictureFlow did reload the artwork, but didn't get stuck at that step. But now, no artwork appears on the albums: they are all here, but all have the empty slide image (with the "?"). When I select on track, the WPS doesn't appear (it doesn't exit out of PictureFlow by selecting a track). Then, to break free of the PictureFlow, I press Menu and select "Go to WPS". It hangs again with no menu or WPS displayed like I described first. Let's reboot again, for the last time :)

Since this is the only Rockbox-capable DAP I have, I don't want to break it, and then rest the iPod one last time, connect the USB and install the latest build (r27963). Then I "reboot" with ROLO.

PictureFlow opens from the WPS, without album art. I tell it to rebuild the cache, then quit the PictureFlow using its menu and selecting "Quit". Then I open PictureFlow again from the WPS. It prepares the album artwork... and now the slides have the artwork (it should have been a momentary bug). However, I still can't select a track from the PictureFlow, and when I press Play to go back to the WPS, it hangs again like I described on the first paragraph.

Well, I'm gonna remove PictureFlow form the hotkey until this is fixed, to avoid having to reboot the iPod again...

Wow...that's entirely different to what I'm seeing.

Well, not entirely. I can enter and exit the pictureflow plugin via the .wps hotkey fine, even browse the tracklistings in pictureflow...but as soon as I try to *play* a file from within pictureflow, that's when the trouble starts.

White screen with: Undefined instruction (always_a_different_address)

*So* bloody annoying! I was using the pictureflow plugin earlier with no problems whatsoever! Now, its failing every time...weird.

I can confirm that it works like a charm now.
