ipod 5.5 240Gb would not play FLAC, APE and WAV files
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:05:29 PM »
I installed the latest Rockbox firmware. Ipod would not play many of the lossless files.
FLAC - periodic scratchy hissing noise instead of music. Some files are OK.
APE - every few seconds music stops for a second and then continues again.
WAV - continuous scratchy noise.
M4A - would not play if ~200 Mb or more.

All these files play fine on my computer.

It's a pity because to be able to play these files was the only reason to install Rockbox.

Also, surprisingly, Rockbox proved to be MUCH slower than the original firmware and very buggy. It hangs a dozen times a day.

Are there any patches or fixes I didn't notice?

Instability and strange effects are often caused by corrupted filesystems. Try checking that

Worth mentioning is that there is a known limitation that prevents long m4a files from playing in Rockbox.

Also double check that you have the right video build.  Try the 32MB/30GB one to be sure:

http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-ipodvideo.zip

A player hacked to 240GB might still have the 32MB/30GB mainboard and thus require the other build.

Mine came from seemingly reputable people - ipodzens.com and is veing detected by the Rockbox utility as 64MB/60GB Gen5.

After checking many FLAC files I've found out that actually only few of them would not play. Is it a known issue? These files play just fine on my computer. In what way FLAC files may be different?

No problem with big M4A files. I can convert and/or cut them into smaller pieces. But it would be nice to be able to play WAV and APE files.

APE - every few seconds music stops for a second and then continues again.

This is what I usually experienced when trying to play APE on my 5th generation iPod.  The CPU is too slow for most APE files.  Only files encoded with a low level of compression can play properly, and typically files are encoded with a high level of compression.   It's documented on the wiki.

FLAC used to play perfectly for me.  I haven't been playing FLAC recently however.  Can you provide a link to a FLAC file which doesn't play properly?
