DAP as computer sound interface?
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:16:11 AM »
Well, that would be interesting! It maybe could not fully replace a good soundcard (latency, channels, ..) but to enjoy music it may be better than a lot of on-board chips!
Someone already asked it on the iAudiophile forum but nobody answered.

So what does the general implementation of the I/O's look like? What are the usual hardware specific limits?
Let's take the Cowon D2+ as example (which is my player): it has an USB interface and a TV out.

The USB Interface may be just an IC, which is directly connected to the SD- or NAND controller, I can imagine. That would also be the reason for audioplayback stopping at USB plugin. The interface to the computer could be hard to achieve if so (but it may still be possible to write the sound on-the-fly to the disc while it is played).
However, there is no USB IC mentioned on the D2 info page. Ideally it would be directly connected to the processor and the USB functions implemented by software  :)

And what about the "TV Out"? Is it a one-way? The connector even looks like a IEEE1394 connector!
In the unlikely case it would be connected to reasonably general processor pins, it could maybe be formed to a computer interface by software.

I would really appreciate if my D2 could supply my laptop with good sound  :D

TV out is one way, and yes its possible for a software USB device like the D2 to act as a sound card.  Do a search, its been discussed before.

The original post was here and is now read-only.

saratoga,
I wouldn't put so much effort in a post if I had found the topic elswhere.
The only post having "sound interface" in it is the one I started yesterday. "soundcard" and "audio interface" also didn't lead to any search results. Neither does your suggestion of "software USB device". If I missed something, please drop the link.

However, just finding my thread locked-up with no chance to reply is annoying.

Searching for "soundcard" has two hits for what you're asking on the first page of results alone.
Sound Interface has one hit on the first page.
Audio Interface has one hit on the first page.
Software USB device has multiple.

Don't restart this thread, please
