RockboxUtility: player autodetection on start
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:35:41 AM »
Hello.

It seems that the RockboxUtility remembers the device last used so that one has to trigger the device detection manually if the RBUtil is started again but with another device. I'd like to propose a feature "Autodetect on Start". When activated, RBUtil would automatically execute the detection function after the start. Apparently, the player has to be connected to the computer before the RBUtil is started. What do you think?

Another feature could be that on USB connection / disconnection the device (its type) is also checked and auto detected.

FlySpray and forums do not seem to have discussions about these features. The former one should be easy to implement, I think.

I have a similar feature in mind since long, but haven't found the time to actually work on it. The problem is that autodetection is currently far from optimal, and unfortunately detecting via USB IDs (which is completely reliably) isn't unambigous. I would even go further and always autodetect the player on startup. To make that useable handling of unclear detections would be necessary, and that in turn requires a rework of the autodetection logic. In any case, I want something like that :)

This isn't trivial because it's highly platform specific. I'd rather simply autodetect the player on startup.

If it would do what it does now but without having to click the button, it would be OK IMHO.

This of course an independent feature.
