Rockbox on Fuze v2 freezes on startup

(1/1)

magicalbum:
Installed on my Fuze v2 via Rockbox Utility and the bootloader seemed to work but when the Rockbox screen shows up it never gets to the main menu. I tried both the current build and the archived one but the results are the same with only the build number different on the bottom. I even thought it might be the bootloader but the same thing happens when I used mkamsboot.exe to patch the firmware to install that way.

I used firmware version 02.02.26 for the install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: I just tried it with firmware version 02.03.33 and i had the same problem.

(let me apologize in advance for the length of what follows, I'm trying to be thorough, though I think I may have crossed a line somewhere)

I have had a very similar experience. I've had Rockbox manually installed and successfully running on my 8GB Fuze v2 for more than 2 months. I recently noticed that Rockbox for Fuze v2  was available through rbutil and decided I wanted a more managed Rockbox experience, I attempted to upgrade the  bootloader and ".rockbox" through rbutil.

When I began, it occurred to me that I should reflash with OF to uninstall my current manual installation of the Rockbox bootloader, I did this with OF 2.03.33 from the Sandisk site. I then proceeded with a Rockbox install through rbutil, which seemed to proceed much as my manual install had, once the upgrade process was over I attempted to reboot and found that the boot process would hang at the screen which gives you the build number your attempting to boot. After a minute or so I performed a hard reboot and found the situation would reoccur.

I then booted into OF with no problems. Perturbed, but not completely dismayed, I attempted to downgrade to an older ".rockbox", thinking it might just be a problem with the current build. The same outcome, Rockbox begins to boot, then hangs at the build number screen, I have allowed it stay there for up to 5 minutes with no change whatsoever.

At this point, my sequence of events gets fuzzy, so this may not be in the right order, I apologize. The next thing I tried to do was a manual patch and reinstallation of the firmware, I did NOT reflash to a vanilla OF before doing this and realize that may have been a serious error. In anycase, the result was the same, Rockbox hangs, OF boots just fine.

I then did something really stupid. I successfully downgrade to OF 2.1.17, my Fuze v2 boots and runs fine, then(and god knows what possessed me to do this) I reflashed using a prepatched firmware I found on youtube (not very bright I know), thing is, this actually installs and boots successfully, "oh happy day!" I'm thinking, but then that little voice in the back of my head says"you know, that was probably pretty stupid, you have no idea what may have been done to those files".

Reluctantly I agree with my inner monologue and decide the problem may simply have been the new bootloader, I proceed to retrieve the files I originally used to install Rockbox on my Fuze v2(which I admit, I should have done in the first place). I then reflash with OF 2.03.31, no problems. I also format the drive from OF. I then reflash with the manually patched firmware I used for my first successful Rockbox installation.

Everything proceeds as normal, I get the "upgrade complete" message, reboot and...
it hangs...exactly like my other attempts to reinstall!(except for the prepatched version I found on youtube). I'm mystified by this to say the least, having used the exact same files previously to manually install and run Rockbox for many months.

As a last resort I decided to try isanggon's experimental build [r27238], I reflash to OF 2.03.31, no problems, then flash with the supplied bootloader and ".rockbox" and success! Rockbox works again on my Fuze v2, but only isanggon's build or the youtube build, no other firmwares will run on those bootloaders, so I'm stuck using unsupported builds for now.

I find the whole situation passing strange, especially the fact that the files I used for my first installation now refuse to work for me. Any wild(and educated)  speculation would be interesting. any suggestions on how to get back to vanilla Rockbox would also be appreciated, I don't mind answering questions or trying experimental builds if it will get me on the road back to a regular Rockbox install.

There is one last bit of info that I'm not sure is significant, but that I want to include in case it's of any consequence, I would often perform a hard reboot to avoid an OF database refresh, probably not smart I know, but with around 16 gigs on my Fuze v2 they really are intolerable(though I might start tolerating them if it's really that bad of a practice).
