iPod 5.5g 30gb Video: Read Only Filesystem/Bad Hard Drive?

One last update - I've had the drive replaced.  Glad I did it.  I had bought the iPod on eBay, and it always felt a bit off, but functioned well enough with the original firmware.

When I installed RockBox, I noticed trouble.  I had a hard time loading music, and it would stall or take a long time to load lists from the database.

Unfortunately, I assumed it was the software, not the hardware.  Now that I've installed RB on a fresh hard drive, I know it wasn't the software.  It works great now.
