Problems installing on Sansa e280v2
« on: July 20, 2010, 03:53:37 PM »
Got a few problems trying to install Rockbox onto a Sansa e280v2 (firmware v03.01.11E) using Rockbox Utilit 1.2.7 on Windows XPsp3
1) The guide says to go to "Setting/USB Mode" and change it to "MSC"...but there is no "USB Mode" available under "Settings", I think that is for the V1.  I did manage to get it into MSC mode by following the last post by jellybean.
2) When running the RB Utility and asking it to autodetect it says "Could not detect a mount point.  Select your mount point manually."

I know I could brick it with a bad install, so I haven't gone any further due to the discrepancy between the guide and my device, and the inability of the RB utility to correctly identify it.  How do I install Rockbox safely?

Thanks

edit: I have noticed that the latest firmware is 03.0.1.16; should I try updating to that first?

edit#2: Ah ha!  Updating to the latest firmware (03.01.16) gave me the "Settings/USB Mode" options.  Might be worth adding that to the guide.  However the utility still could not detect a mount point, although it works OK with an e280v1.

For some Devices the utility is unable to detect the correct mountpoint / drive letter on fresh devices. So the user has to select the correct mountpoint themself.

So if you select/enter the mountpount of your sansa, it should work fine, no worries.

And indeed it did.  Only minor issue I had was finding the firmware (totally understand why you can't provide that) but a few quick click got me it.

After Rockbox installed, I discovered that my e280v2 has a radio.  Freakin' awesome!  (Until the scrap FM and all move to DAB...)

If you select the wrong mount point the build will get installed on the wrong drive. However, the only critical part is the bootloader, and various checks will ensure that it doesn't get installed on the wrong drive (except for players where installing the bootloader is simply placing a file on the drive, in those cases nothing bad can happen -- except Rockbox not starting and the wrong drive containing files that won't make sense on it).
