Loading Music - Songs with same title

I'm a new user, and currently in the process of loading music into ipod 5.5 80gb. My problem is inability to load two songs of the same title. I've tried using two different ids3 tag changing programs, to no avail. Does the program simply go by song title, or does it use album title, artist, file size, anything, in addition?

There are VERY many songs with the same title, whether the same artist (LIVE!) or another. What's up? thanks...........kbcvg

I'm not sure by your post whether you're talking about the process of transferring music files to the iPod hard drive, or whether you're talking about playing said music using Rockbox on your iPod.

This doesn't sound like a problem with Rockbox, but with whatever program you are loading songs onto your iPod with. What program are you using?

Rockbox doesn't care what the ID3 tags say. Well, it does but you can have two songs with the exact same id3 tags and Rockbox will play them just fine. Rockbox also isn't in charge of what songs you have on your player (which is why we need to know what you used to get the songs on there in the first place)

I started with my Creative Music Organizer from an old player, then tried a simple drag and drop from Windows Explore. In Windows Explore you get the option of replacing the file that's already there with the new one, but that's all.

Any other ideas for loading music into ipod 5,5 80 gb?

The file system won't allow two files with the same name to occupy the same directory.  So, you either need to put more information in the file names to distinguish them or else store the files in different directories.

To follow up on Chronon's post: Windows Explorer only gives that message if the filenames (and directory structure) are exactly the same.

Perhaps it'd be best to have a directory structure that's along the lines of:

Artist\Album\Track# - Title.extension

That way you could use Windows Explorer to copy across the files and you wouldn't get that message.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to copy across your music, however you'd be limited to using the Database in Rockbox as iTunes obfuscates the directories/filenames, just to be annoying!

Thanks for your help! I got around it by going backwards, and re-naming a file that was ALREADY on the new player. Why it wouldn't accept a renamed file, I don't know. I'm going to try the directory suggestion, to see if that works, as well.
I don't have/use itunes, as I've never subscribed to their B/S. Now, I'm hoping I have the best of 2 worlds; ipod hardware and Rockbox software!           thanks..........kbcvg
