Installation problem
« on: July 20, 2010, 09:45:15 AM »
Initially I was having a problem getting the ipod to mount under linux (Ubuntu 10.04) but now that is resolved after allowing itunes to reset it to factory defaults under my Windows 7 install.

I then - under Ubuntu - ran gksudo ./RockboxUtility as per someone's instructions in the forum after navigating to the proper directory and then choosing my model, but get the message:
"Error reading partition table - possibly not an ipod"
I get the same message whether trying to install the bootloader or doing the complete install.

I've read in the Ubuntu forums also but nothing I try seems to work.

Can anyone point out what I might be doing wrong or maybe something I'm missing?

edit:
This unit is  working fine using gtkpod.

TIA

Please post the output of the Help / Troubleshooting / System Trace and System Information dialog. Also, does the Ipod work with the Apple firmware? And, what exact Ipod do you own after all? It's almost impossible to tell what's going wrong here without knowing the exact Ipod ...

Sorry, I thought I gave details - that was another post elsewhere.

Its a 2nd generation shuffle.
Apple firmware is what's on it now and it works fine under gtkpod.

Here's the System Trace:

I think refusing to install on devices that don't run rockbox is the expect result.

I've tried a number of different softwares that I didn't even realize that rockbox didn't support the shuffle.
Sorry to waste your time

Plus, selecting an Ipod 1G / 2G for a Shuffle isn't only wrong but also pretty much asking for such results. However, autodetection should have told you that no supported player was found.

Wrong??  :D
Whatever.
The ipod chose me, not the other way around.
The shuffle was a gift.
Autodetection only told me to choose the ipod manually.

He's not talking about choosing the iPod as a product to take into your possession, he's talking about identifying the iPod 1G/2G, which has little-to-no relevance to the iPod Shuffle 2G, as your device to Rockbox Utility.

He was referring to this line in the System Trace:
Code: [Select]
10.[Settings] GET U: "platform" "ipod1g2g"

Well, I would say little - but I could have avoided all this by simply doing a bit of reading as I usually do.

System trace.... yeah, now that I've completely misunderstood I finally get it.
