and i know what type of adapter to buy. i just don't know WHERE to buy it for cheap

While not the cheapest, the easiest to find is this one at Radio Shack:

If you get one, make sure you get the right adapter plug and verify it is set to POSITIVE at the tip.  DO NOT rely on the sales people at Radio Shack or you may end up like this poor poster - http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=245.0
